Osiyo~

Even the blinding glow of a first sale doesn’t dim my desire to bring other great authors to you. I read a wonderful book while I was supposed to be revising and writing two weeks ago. A scot locked inside an orb, a woman who can’t find Mr. Right. I absolutely love, love, love this story. I’d followed it through a contest over several months and fell in love with the characters. I was delighted when the book won the contest. I was ecstatic when the book came out, and I was lucky enough to win a copy from the author. As soon as I finished the book I knew she had to be my first guest on this new blog! She graciously accepted the offer, and comes bearing gifts .

Now, I bring Beyond a Highland Whisper to you, along with the wonderful author, and my dear friend, Maeve Greyson. Please, welcome Maeve and give her some love!

About Beyond a Highland Whisper:

Which will triumph? The vengeful wrath of a cruel witch or a love spanning across time?

Blurb:

The last time Latharn MacKay walked among his kinsman was in Scotland of 1410.  Sensuous and charismatic, all the women wanted him, but none could capture his heart.  Latharn’s charm became his curse when a dark sorceress didn’t take rejection well.  She snared his soul into a crystal globe until the one woman destined to be his love whispered his release.  Now all Latharn has to do is find her and guide her to him without speaking a word.

One of the youngest archeologists in St Louis of 2010, Nessa credits one thing for this achievement: the recurring dream of a heart-stopping Highlander since the summer she turned eighteen years old.  Little does she know, he’s not some fantasy cooked up by her subconscious.  He’s a trapped soul determined for Nessa to end his six centuries in hell. Can love prevail over the dark magic of a woman scorned?

About Maeve:

Maeve Greyson writes paranormal/fantasy romances from her cozy home in western Kentucky.  Tucked away in the middle of a five-acre wood, she flavors her stories with magic and legend –anything might happen to get to that happily ever after.

Her writing partner, Jasper –the rat terrier/Chihuahua mix, critiques all her work.  Under his sharp eye and the endless support of her husband of over thirty-one years, she escapes the stress of real life by pouring her dreams into the keyboard.

Her debut novel, BEYOND A HIGHLAND WHISPER, is now available from The Wild Rose Press and she recently contracted THE HIGHLANDER’S FURY with them as well. Her paranormal/fantasy romance, ETERNITY’S MARK will be released by Kensington’s Brava line in April 2012.

If only…

*wistful sigh*  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the ability to do REAL magic? You know what I mean. The kind of power where you look at the bulging “if-I-don’t-do-laundry-soon-we’re-gonna-be-naked” clothes hamper, wiggle your nose and suddenly the basket is empty and there’s color-coded piles of neatly folded clean clothes stacked upon your bed –or better yet, put away in their respective drawers and closets.

Or you oversleep, so you blink at the coffee maker and “wah lah” it’s full. You blink at your droopy-eyed, hair-gone-wild reflection in the mirror and your visage immediately transforms into a well groomed, smiling persona.

Yeah, I know. And if a frog had wings, he wouldn’t bump his butt every time he hopped. But by-de-lolly-golly, I can dream. I guess that’s one reason my stories effervesce with magic and impossibilities come true. If I can’t do magic or have my own super powers, then I’ll live out that wish through my characters.

Before I give you a taste of one such magical scene, I’d like to take a moment to thank Calisa for inviting me to her lovely new home in cyberspace. Isn’t it just gorgeous? She such a great hostess and a true friend so, I feel so lucky to be here.  And when you finish enjoying this little excerpt, if you leave a comment telling me what super power or gift of magic you long to possess, you’ll be entered to win a digital copy of  “Beyond a Highland Whisper”.  Oh! And be sure and leave your contact information so we can easily find you.

And now for a bit about the excerpt: in this scene, Latharn and Nessa have just emerged from their first “real life” discovery of the pleasures to be found in each other’s arms. They, along with Latharn’s descendents, Brodie and Fiona, have decided to go to dinner and celebrate life’s many joys. Problem is…Latharn doesn’t have any clothes suitable for the twenty-first century. See how he solves this problem:

Excerpt:

Nessa curled her toes as she whiffed the strong spirits. Eyeing Latharn over the rim of her glass, the reality of his bare-chested attire suddenly struck her. “First, I think we’d better concentrate on getting Latharn a wardrobe that will help him blend into this century.”

With the drink tray balanced on one hip, Fiona turned, her gaze skimming over Latharn’s muscular chest barely covered with his plaid. “Aye. Ye’re right. The problem is that Brodie’s not as large as Cousin Latharn and canna even loan him anything to wear to the shops.”

Brodie circled Latharn and looked him up and down. “One of Da’s kilts might fit him. We might even still have one of his tunics in one of the chests in the attic. Da was a mountain of a man as well, although he wasna nearly so tall.”

Crossing his arms over his chest, Latharn yawned in apparent boredom with the current conversation. He sported a mischievous grin as he slowly spun around. “How is this?” he asked, spreading his hands wide. Latharn had clad his body in a skintight black T-shirt, a crotch-hugging pair of designer jeans, and a pair of fine Italian leather boots.

Trish whistled at the way Latharn filled said jeans and nudged Nessa in the ribs. “I can’t believe you came out of that bedroom at all. Who needs food with that around?”

Brodie cleared his throat and coughed a bit. “Ye might want to choose something a bit more conservative when we go out tonight to dine. At least something that doesna make the rest of us look quite so dumpy. Eh, give us a break, Cousin?”

With a grin at Brodie’s irritation, Latharn once more waved his hands. His clothing changed to a bit looser fitting fisherman’s sweater and a pair of crisp khaki pants.

Nessa pinpointed Latharn’s problem. Her lust engines kicked into overdrive as he paraded around the room. No matter the style of dress Latharn chose, it was a certainty he was going to turn heads. He exuded power, pure unadulterated strength, and an undeniable charm. He was the type of man women followed with their eyes, then plotted to find a way to meet. And he belonged to her.

“Go back to the jeans. Nessa and I really liked the jeans,” Trish instructed with a decisive nod.

“Trish! He’s not a Barbie doll,” Nessa retorted, elbowing her friend in the ribs.

“Well, he’s damn sure no Ken.” Trish cast a ribald wink at Nessa as she tossed down the rest of her scotch.

“Do ye always have this effect on women?” Brodie heaved a great sigh as he steered Latharn toward the outer door.

“How do ye think I ended up in that ball?” Latharn replied with a jerk of his head toward the shattered crystal.

  2. I would love to control time. But I don’t want to time travel, and I don’t want to go back and fix mistakes – after all, past mistakes have helped to shape who I am today. No, I want to be able to take a moment and stretch it out – to slow time down. I’d love to say I’d only use it for the good moments, like a child’s first step or the first time your lover spoke those three oh-so important words. But honestly, I would also use it so I could get more accomplished in a day. Sad, I know. :^)

If I could have magical powers, I would love to have them like Bewitched did. I would love to be able to twitch my nose and my whole house could be clean or be able to be in another country in no time.
I love anything Scottish, especially the rugged handsome men. The book sounds wonderful.

  6. You have such a delightful way with words, Maeve. I always know I will end reading your blogs with a smile. Happy Monday to you! 🙂

If I had the power of magic, I would be sending this email to you from a tower room in my very own castle in the Scottish Highlands. My hero hunk, dressed in his kilt, would be standing at attention waiting for my next request….. Why not dream BIG!

I got an early birthday present – my very own Kindle. I preordered and when it got here, your story was ready. Now if I can take time from writing to read it. I know it’s going to be a treat.

    My greetings to Jasper. 🙂

  7. Hi!

I love the excerpt! And like you, I love to dream all the time. The superpower I would love to have would be to freeze time, rewind it if I have to. What better way to say your true age would always be the age you want it to be? (I like the number 25) But then that would stir suspicion and people would think we were witches. Lol We all could have a hot tub time machine and go back in time and invent or change past events.

Thanks for the read blog, Calisa and Maeve!

    • Time travel or controlling time is quickly becoming the popular choice, Lani! I wonder if that’s because so many of us are always up to our ears in things we need to get done? 😉

  8. Hi Maeve, what a cute excerpt. I have to read this book soon. As for magic, sometimes I think we live in magic all day long. You press a button and turn on a washer, you push a switch and warm the place, turn a key and start a car. I bet people from two centuries ago would scream, magic, magic!!!

  9. Maeve, I can’t thank you enough for this sweet diversion from my own writing! Loved the scene where she’s dressing him. As far as magic goes, I’d zap myself into that room alone with Latharn for three days! Great story. Still reading (alas, my own editing does call), but was very excited when Calisa said she was interviewing you. Congratulations!

    • LOL! thanks so much, Joelene. Don’t tell my Hubby…ahem…but I wouldn’t mind spending some tme with a Highlander either. Of course, it would be all in the name of research. I’d make that sacrifice for my readers! (wink & wicked grin).

  10. Not sure I want to know what people think, Tina. lol But I would love to be able to wave my hands and make thing happen- like dishes and housework. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve wished (and tried diligently to no avail) to be like Barbara Eden, or Elizabeth Montgomery- in I Dream of Jeanie and Bewitched. Blink and it all goes away.

  11. Beyond a Highland Whisper sounds really good, Maeve. Can’t wait to read it.

As for magic powers, I’d like to be able to read others minds at will. Wouldn’t want their thoughts to bombard me, but when I wanted to, I could read what they are really thinking.

Let’s see…what magic power would I love to possess….? I think I’d like to be able to be invisible. I can’t help thinking how fun that could be. The possibilites are endless….

Thanks for this great contest you two!

  14. I don’t know if it counts as magic, but I’d love to be able to time travel! Or maybe travel between different dimensions in time…maybe I should start looking for a TARDIS of my own??? (a Doctor Who reference for all non-followers of the show).

    I’ve got quite a weakness for highlanders…YUM!
