Heroic Inspiration

Osiyo~

Wasn’t the Carina Press free reads last week just awesome? I hope you got all five! A great big ‘THANK, YOU CARINA PRESS!!!’ shout out for their generosity.

It’s nearly the end of June and I had hoped, planned, to finish the new round of revisions on Perfect Doctor Viv by the end of the month. I realize that to meet this goal I would have had to write. Actual words on paper, or computer, not wildly misplaced thoughts. But I’ve been in turmoil, my life is in turmoil lately. My FIL fell ill last year and needs someone with him all the time. It is my husband’s turn to care for his dad, which means it’s my turn. Unlike my BIL who just moved out, we own(ed) our own home on my sister’s land. To help FIL we had to physically pack up and move thirty miles to FIL’s. This also included leaving my daughter’s dog and my cat behind. As well as my dear horse, Sonny. Thankfully, my niece, w/help from my daughter, took over our house including physical responsibility of my animals. Also, thankfully, we’re close enough to visit often. (More on this topic later…)

But because of the moving preparations in the last few weeks I’ve had little inspiration or inclination to work on revisions. To say nothing of time. Nil. My muse left a Dear Jane note telling me to call when I was settled and ready to get serious about this writing thing again. Not only that, I didn’t have internet for the first week here! It’s cruel and unusual punishment to expect any author to live without our social networks, our peeps for longer than one short time a day! But, I’ve been trying to get back into my groove (and by ‘groove’  don’t mean my cool swing, but rather the ridiculous writing rut I live dependently in) and take advantage of the silence of networking.

In an effort to stay focused on the book I realized that, though I can see my hero in my mind I can’t describe him or imagine him as a real person. How pathetic, right? I mean, I have this completed manuscript with this rockin’ gorgeous hero,  a mediflight paramedic. Tall, strong, handsome. Brown hair and golden eyes that mesmerize my heroine. Generic. So, what does Connor McKay look like? Really? Every time I try to visualize him I see tall, stringy men with glasses and thinning, or nearly gone, hair. I know. Stereotyping, or a bad imagination.

So- in desperation to get my mind back on the revisions and the story I have a Harlequin/Mills and Boon editor’s interest in (still)- I went searching for Connor one night, followed by results that sent my writing friends and critique partners in to hyperventilation mode.

I done good- as my Daddy would have said. <grins> And, with this as inspiration I actually got a few gratifying words written today. What do you say? Can you handle a paramedic like Connor McKay?

What do you do when life interferes and you totally lose your momentum, even on a book that you love? Do you work on something else to get the flow back? Take a time out to just refill the creative well? Or do you give yourself permission to just write crap in hopes that your muse will take pity on you and pick up the slack (because I know she’s sitting over my shoulder shaking her head at my pity party antics right now)? More over- do you have a good visual of your characters to fall back on?

Happy writing,

Dodadagohvi~

    • I apologize for not responding to your very welcome post Write on Face! For some reason it was sent to my spam folder and I just found it! But you’re welcome. I hope my posts help others even in some small way. Well, most times. Sometimes I post just for fun like tomorrow’s post.

  2. I don’t have a sure fire way to get going on a WIP when life intrudes. It’s very difficult to be creative when things are falling apart around you. Best thing I can say is keep trying until something happens…or yes, go to something different and set your current WIP aside for a while.

Yes…Connor could inspire many things. 😉

    • I agree Alicia. He inspires so many things! And the current (other) book has got me motivated again today, so I think I will be able to focus on Connor now.

  3. Hope your FIL gets better Calisa.

Connor is beautiful. Gorgeous. Sexy. Handsome. If that’s not what you were going for then try again and be sure and share the results! 🙂

I write on a different w.i.p., preferably a short, which is probably why I have too many to count. Good news though I finished one last night!

  4. Looking too hard is a sure way to ‘scare it away,’ at least for me. The best things have happened for me when I least expect it. Several people have commented to just keep busy and your muse will reignite.

Now about Connor, there is no way around the fact that he is hot! That may be all the inspiration you need.

I know how things in life get in the way. I’m sorry to hear about your FIL and that you’ve had to leave all that you love. This is only a minor set back. I know as soon as you settle in you’ll pick up your writing again.

    • Aw- thanks Ruthie. Your kind words are an inspiration it themselves! I got super news today that may help me find my groove again too…but that’s for another post!

Connor- um, nothing more to say there… 😉

  5. Sometimes life gets in the way, or we just lose inspiration. After getting little or nothing done on my WIP for several months, I took a break and wrote a novella for a series (which was so fun I wrote 2 more.) I was back in the writing habit!! Afterward, I planted my butt at my computer with fresh enthusiasm for the old WIP. Two months later I finished it and sent it off to my editor. Sometimes a constructive break helps. Sometimes our muse needs to be taken out and shaken. Best of luck getting back on track. That photo would certainly inspire me!

    • H9ow right you are Jannine. I’ve done that- write something else to renew the glow of new words. But this time time has a way of interfering too and I’m not very good at getting around that. lol Must try harder!

  6. “Life is something that happens while we are making other plans.” John Lennon. Sorry about your FIL–I hope he’s able to get back on his feet–for his sake and that of your family.
Connor is amazing. Sometimes that’s all you need–a little visual inspiration.lol
As for your muse–all you have to do is stay super busy–with things that have to be done. Or at least that’s how it is for me. Running fifteen minutes late and in the shower trying to get ready for work, and mine gives me the best idea EVER! I’m late, wet, and don’t have anything to write with. Just hang in there and don’t despair, it’ll come.

    • Super busy. Got it Amie. Yep the muse usually strikes when we least need it to, or expect it. lol Though I haven’t been caught in quite your situation (yet)! Thanks for dropping in. I need to print a hard pic of Connor now. 🙂

  7. Calisa, I’m sorry to hear about the FIL, hope he’s better and things get back to normal. Love Connor, yummy hero. I go through magazines for pictures of people who look like the characters in my head, sometimes I find a pic that inspires a story. When I hit a roadblock I do something else, see the grandkids, shop, etc. I carry a notebook because ideas always come when I least expect them. Hope you have a good week.

    • Hi Gale! I love your ideas for beating the blank wall. FIL is ok, just can’t live alone anymore due mostly to all the meds he’s on since the stroke. Thanks for saying hi!

  8. Oh Calisa, I am sooooo where you are. For the first time EVER since I started writing, I have literally been ignoring those responsibilities I should be focused on. I have edits showing up any day, and an uncompleted manuscript I promised back to my editor in…oh…March? Not good. The weight of it burdens my shoulders. When I first started writing, I did nothing but live with my characters. Cranked out four books in a row (well, 3 1/2…one of them being the story I just mentioned that I STILL haven’t finished) and then life suddenly intervened. I almost get jealous of authors that can churn out stories like nobody’s business while keeping track of all those daily activities. I can’t do it. If my focus get pulled away by ‘real’ life, I’m suddenly left with the remains of a story I’ve not completed. Hang in there, girlfriend. I once told my mother, “Write one excellent sentence a day. Just one. It’ll be that much less you need to do tomorrow.” Don’t know if this helps, but on those days I feel overwhelmed, sometimes its all I can do.

    • I know what you mean AJ. Life has a way of making us forget to prioritize, or when to. I know you can finish the book. After the whirlwind of Jezzy there is no other choice for you. I know it’s a great one. Thanks for stopping in!
