Nov 1 ~It’s NANO! ~ Calisa Rhose

Welcome back to the Ranch! I am super excited this November!

But before we begin I need to announce the two winners of my Haunted Garden blog hop. I am excited to announce Sandy Rowland and Kristina Knight win the two gift certificates from me! I’ll be contacting you for your information!

Ok! Why am I excited? Ask me why. Go on, ask me! Ask…

Okay, I’ll tell you.

I’m thrilled to actually get to participate again. This will be my third attempt at this fun contest where you write 50 thousand words (or more), a full manuscript to THE END, in one month–thirty days. My first two tries didn’t get me the golden crown because I never finished the word count. The first one in 2005 I got to 30K and it’s still growing today, but I spent so much time editing the previous days’ words that, though I always got my word count in, I would basically end up deleting half of those the next day.  BAD!

My next venture a couple of years later just didn’t go well. I don’t even remember the story or how much I got, but it was less than 30K. LOL

For those of you who are going out for NANO this year–whether you’re new or experienced nanoers–heed my words…DO NOT EDIT! Turn off that internal editor, disengage the auto grammer and editor on the computer. DO NOT read back over anything written on previous days! The purpose of NANO is to JUST WRITE. To get words on paper, monitor, or whatever method you use to write. If you have a writing pad that won’t let you go back and edit readily, I even suggest you use that to get your daily word count in, upload that to your computer, but don’t go back into the word doc until December 1.

You need to write 1667 words each day to make the thirty days quota (that number gives you ten spare words btw).

Here’s the link to how it works-

My story, whatever it will be– because I have NO clue, even as I write this the night before it posts–will be at least 60K, so I’m making my daily word count goal 2000. I’d like to finish this story and type The End on Nov. 30th. 😀 I have a lot of other things to finish up this first week so I may not meet that goal but I’ll go make it up later and throw in a couple of 3K days. I tend to do that before the holiday too since I know I won’t keep up during that week, especially with my brothers visiting for three days at Thanksgiving.

When the day is done, if anyone wants to gab about how you did that day, I’d love to hear in the comments of this post throughout the month. Just pop in here and tell other Nanoers what your daily word count is and what we can do to help you if you fall short. I plan to keep this post active the whole time, so come dish share special lines about your story as it unravels.

Even if you aren’t participating–come cheer us crazy people on! 😆

There is a check list I complete daily and I’d love if you want to post your daily list here too. I’m posting it for everyone so come on back, grab a wine, beer, coffee and some L’il Smokeys and lets have a great NANO! There’s cake and chocolate for those who need it too.

About Calisa Rhose

I'm a mother of three daughters and wife to a wonderful man of 35+ years. I'm also an avid seamstress, polymer clay artisan and die-hard crafter, always coming up with things to make with, and for, my six granddaughters and two grandsons. Check out my craft site when you have a moment. I'm also a small online business owner of Okie fLips on Etsy and Poshmark (eBay/Merkari coming soon), and I'm a published author of sensual romance. I write about stubborn men and women who don't take no for an answer, and there's always that golden HEA. Cowboys and first responders are my favorite contemporary heroes to write about. My light paranormal heroes are strong men ready to protect their women--not that they need protecting, since they are capable of caring for themselves.

  1. Okay- I’ve got a couple of days to make up some count on. 😦 I hate getting a slow start, but I’m writing and I LOVE that! I have 369…total, on my NaNo project so far. Oh, and a nice synopsis! LOL I should be at 6664 (oy) words as of today, but I expect to hit a couple of 3-4K days in the next week or so to catch up though. 😀

    How are you doing?

  2. Yay to you joining me this year too Calisa! 🙂 I did win Nano last year BUT the story is such a stinker, I don’t know its even worth looking over again. It did teach me I CAN dedicate myself to writing every day and a good chunk of story too. We’re into our second day of Nano here and yesterday, my count was 2174 words. I’m aiming for at least 2K a day too. I know there will be a few times I won’t be able to reach that amount, so it gives me a bit of breathing space.

    • 2174 is a great accomplishment, LaVerne! I’m excited to NaNo with you. Look me up on the national site and buddy me. 😀 I’ll report in tomorrow.

  3. Calisa OMG – I had such a fun time last night handing out candy,
I completely forgot NaNo starts today. Thank-you for the reminder
and I will be checking back in with u regularly for tips. This is my third
NaNo too. Never made the 50,000 word count BUT a book came out of both
the other two. So my novel The Girl With Sand in Her hair will
at least form a skeletal outline of a third book. Yay!

    • I’m happy to be your Nano alarm, Wordactress! I love the title of your book. Good luck! 🙂 I can’t wait to see your progress. Are you registered at the official site? What name and I’ll try to buddy you. I’m not good at it, but I’ll try. LOL

  4. Good luck, Calisa! I don’t nano…but I can cheer with the best of ’em! Go you!!!

  5. I wrote 5,371 words this morning. Now I need to spend the rest of the day outlining more chapters or I won’t have anything to write tomorrow. That kind of output is not usual for me, but I’ve been dying to start writing this one so I already had the first two chapters planned out and written in my head (although they came out differently on paper…err…screen).

    • YAY For you Ally! That’s an awesome count! It never comes out the way you see it in your head. LOL But look at the bright side- you’ve covered tomorrow too if you need a little extra time to plot. 😆

  6. I nearly gasped outloud when I read that first paragraph and saw that you went back and edited!! Noooo!!! The whole point of NaNo is to NOT edit as you go. But I see you’ve learned that. And you don’t have to actually finish the story, just write the 50k. If it goes on beyond that all the better. I’m totally crazy to do NaNo, work on the HTH story and whatever edits I get from my SMP release. But we’ll cheer each other on!

  7. Best of luck, girl. I know you can do it!

    • Thanks Callie! I need the confidence. I spent the morning ‘working’ so I plan to write for a couple of hours this evening. Good luck to you too.

  8. I love your advice. This will be my second year. I finished my first book last year, and it comes out in February of 2013. : ) I plan on finishing my second. I have the outline and half of the first chapter so I have a path to follow. Good luck and I’ll be cheering you on.

    • Yay for your success, Lynda! What book and who is publishing it? I wish you all the luck this year too! It was worth the post if you got something out of it. I hope you’ll come back and share how you’re doing each day/week or whenever you have a chance. 😀

  9. I’ve never participated in this. I wanted to this year but the timing was crappy. Next year for sure. Good luck, Calisa. I envy the fun you’re going to have amid all that hard work!

    • I haven’t been able to for the last six years because it always seemed I’d begin a new story in Sept/Oct and not have time to Nano something else too. LOL Maybe next year we can both plan to…and a hurricane won’t get in your way (or a tornado in mine)! 😆

  10. Go for it! Hope it is all you need it to be.

  11. You go, girl! I know you can do it!!! I’ve got a book I need to finish and it’s not cooperating, so I’ll have to forgo NaNo this year.

  12. Good Luck Calisa…hope you reach your goal and beyond!!!!
