My Writing Plan For 2014-2015 ~ by Calisa Rhose

Osiyo~

Happy week two of 2014! I got a little busier than I’d expected last week and I didn’t get to post my 2-year writing plan as I’d hoped. Such is the life of a pantser. We don’t plan well, or at least this one doesn’t! 😆 Now that the granddaughter is back in school and life has sort of returned to normal, and I don’t foresee any (more) unexpected events for a while, I’ve put the plan to paper, as they used to say.

noNew Year's ResolutionsI’ve set goals before. I’ve set resolutions too. I’m not fond of resolutions because by March I’ve a) already broke one or more, or b) forgotten what they

How I wish my marbles were so cooperative!

How I wish my marbles were so cooperative!

were because I’m not a list maker.

I write things down on scraps of paper, envelopes-often belonging to someone else in the house- or one of the hundreds of tablets I keep laying around. But, then, said ‘someone’ takes their/MY envelope. How rude. Right? I am also addicted to post-it notes. I love that they stick any and everywhere!

postitnotesBut those lovely sticky notes- well, they end up in the oddest places I never think to check! Oy…

Or, and this is most usually the case, I forget where I’ve put ‘that’ scrap of paper or the specific tablet with the info- I knew I’d remember where I put it- was. I’ll never learn NOT to rely on my (un)trusty mind. *sigh*

So, I’m going to try making a plan. Not plotting, mind you, just the bare basics of what I’d like to accomplish if disorder wasn’t nipping at my heels 24/7; family, responsibilities, obligations… Things I’d want to do over the next 48 months if I didn’t, say…have a life. 😀

My Writing Plan For 2014-2015

(in no particular order because this IS NOT a list, and that would be too much like plotting :P)

2014:

1. Finish expanding contemporary romance, short story “Just One Night in Paradise” and self-publish by the end of March— This ‘will-be-a’ novella is almost ready for edits and polishing so should be easily doable if I don’t chicken out.

2. Finish full length contemporary novel, Hearts Afire, fireman WIP.

3. Finish full length paranormal novel, In Ghosts She Trusts- Juliette’s story- (bk 1 of Ghostly Trust series or trilogy), ghost WIP.

4. Finish Redesigning Sassy-bk 1, Dew Drop Diaries series (contemporary novellas)

5. Write Chasing Lainey-bk 2, DDDiaries

6. Write Saving Shelby-bk 3, DDDiaries

7. Write Marrying Lucy-bk 4, DDDiaries

8. Self-publish Dew Drop Diaries series.

9. Submit Hearts Afire (publishing house/format TBD)

10. Blog weekly (besides guest posts)

11. Promote any/all books out.

12. Rewrite and re-publish Home.

13. Contract an agent. (still considering this so may not do it)

2015:

1. Set new 2-year plan if this first year pans out.

2. Write paranormal novel, Ghost of a Chance- Romeo’s story, (bk 2 of Ghostly Trust)-Juliette’s twin brother.

3. Write contemporary novel Winter’s Song.

4. Decide how or where to publish Ghostly Trust books.

5. Publish/submit Ghostly Trust books.

6. Promote any/all books out.

7. Blog weekly.

8. Write bk 5 of DDDiaries.

9. Write bk 6 of DDDiaries.

10. Write bk 7 of DDDiaries.

11. Write bk 8 of DDDiaries. (writing these depends on how the first four do)

12. publish bks 4-8 of DDDiaries**

**Write four other novellas if not more DDDiaries.

This first year alone will be a huge challenge for me. I typically eke out one book or novella a year because I get lazy, break something, or just get *too busy* outside of writing. My worst downfall is that I let distractions keep me from the stories burning a hole in my head.

It’s so easy to just not open that word doc each day, so I’m also going to try to change that about my writing time. I’m going to tryto set specific hours for writing and other times for blogging, ‘playing’ on the web, research, social media, etc. It will most likely take me a while to find a system and schedule that works for me, that I’ll be able to work with.

I’m not even sure what time I’m the most productive because my self-discipline is so off the scale I can’t find it, but I’m going to set this goal for myself aside from everything else I’ve listed above because I NEED to. This is a must to become more productive in my writing, and therefore more successful as a writer.

We all know it’s almost impossible to get rich off writing, to write the great book that makes a movie, or just one people will rant about and buy. But there’s not even a glimmer of a chance to be successful in any capacity if I don’t write…and sell. :/

Some of these list items may change because I might’ve bitten off more than I can chew, infact, I’m almost certain I have, but I did it on purpose. If I have to much to do, I’ll at least try to make it and I figure I will be able to accomplish the part I can and still not be a total failure. LOL But I’m going to try to keep up with myself and do it all–because that’s how I roll, or more like tumble. 😆

First I have to get past my initial self-publishing experience and realize I lived through it, no matter how bad or good it goes. 😀

And so, there you have it. My writing plan.

Oh, for the record, I’ve already got my cover art for Redesigning Sassy ready to go- it’s bee-oo-tee-ful!- and some of the other DDD series covers are purchased and ready to finalize once I settle on the titles.

What do you hope to accomplish in 2014? Are your goals too high? Not high enough? What IS just right?

Happy writing my friends and best wishes for your goals no matter what they may be!

  1. Lots of good goals here. Stick to them, have a dedicated writing time, and don’t let anything get between you and opening that file up to finish your stories.

    You can do it!

  3. Calisa, I always write out my goals for the year. This phrase serves as my impetus: “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.” One suggestion…don’t forget to include goals for other parts of your life, since writing isn’t/can’t be everything we are and do! Cheers for a wonderful 2014! Rolynn

Calisa, that is one hell of a list you’ve got there! Sheesh.

I, too, have a life that distracts me from my writing goals (3 small kids / stay-at-home mom) so I feel your pain AND your drive to find the time and schedule that works for you. While I haven’t made any specific goals, I do plan / have begun revising my very 1st manuscript and hope to get both it and the sequels published within the next 2 years. Perhaps a short story or two for those days I need to clear my head.

Best of luck!! I know I’ll need some myself.

    • I will admit now that I read another author’s astonishing 5-yr plan prior to making my own list. In retrospect…that’s a bad, BAD idea!!!!!! Do NOT read about others’ goals before making your own! 😆

The good thing was that it motivated me. The not so good part was it challenged me to do better. :/ Not good. I’m already looking at this list and cringing. lol But, I’m still going to shoot for it and do my best. 🙂 I know what you mean about life and family, though. I have my 8yo granddaughter living with us and my fil whom we care for post-stroke. To say the least, it gets…interesting at times.

      Good luck to us both!

  5. With promo sucking up so much time, I plan on writing 3 books and maybe a novella this year. I’m still trying to streamline the promo thing. I can’t seem to get a grasp on spending more time on writing and less on making a name as a writer. Good luck on your goals, hon.

    • I know what you mean, Vonnie. Promo- how much do we ‘need’ and when does necessity turn into play? I need to get a grip on my own promo. If you figure out a streamlining formula I’d like to know! lol Good luck on your goals too. I know you’ll knock it out of the park. 🙂

  6. I’m trying to write more this year, too, but I’ll be happy to finish 2 books…I try to stick to a schedule but some days just get away from me.

  7. Great post. I am also hoping to write more this year by sticking to a daily goal. I agree about distractions. Some days are gone before I’ve started! Just eaten up by little things…

  9. Calisa, you may need nine lives to get all of this done, but at least you made the list. Super good luck and may the muse be with you and the family let you proceed. I have similar challenges here.

    • LOL That’s what I’m afraid of, Beth! I always seem to take on more than I should and end up stressing when I don’t make the goals. So…I’ve already given myself permission to NOT beat myself up if I don’t succeed, if it means too much stress. But I’m going to try to make it. 🙂 Good luck on your goals.

  11. Congrats to you on your awesome list and goals! I’ve got one of those in my head, not written down at this point, but the writing/publishing schedule is one I hope to stick to. I’m pubbing my first indie novella too, hopefully later this month or February, so I’m right there in the learning curve with you.

As for writing time, I used to write when the mood struck or I was able to find free time *snort!* Never made much headway doing that, then several years ago I made Sunday my writing day. Barring an emergency, I write every Sunday afternoon for 5-6 hours whether I’m in the mood or not. It’s helped me be more productive and my husband knows it’s “my time.”

Good luck with all of your goals!

    • That’s great you can write on one whole day, Mae. I have all day every week day, but some days fil can’t seem to get through a day without talking to me twenty times. lol Oh, and right now he had a touch of pneumonia so needs a bit more help with daily things he normally does for himself so…

But thanks for cheering me on! Good luck on your first indie attempt! Maybe we can promo together if mine comes together on schedule. 😀

you have a plan. Keeping real life away from the list is the hard part.

    • There’s a reason I didn’t include real life in the plans. I want to make myself keep on track around life, in spite of it. 🙂 Thanks for visiting.

  13. Awesome list and goals! It’ll be a lot of work, but so worth it. Even if you complete half the workload in a year, it’s a great accomplishment. 🙂

I haven’t been brave enough to write my huge list yet, but I’ll be going though all my outstanding WIPs and getting them finished off, submitted and/or self-published. Like you and many other authors I prefer to work on several stories at once, switching back and forth as I feel inspired, lol!

Best of luck! And I’m happy to beta-read for you 😀

    • Yes I do that, Kelly! I need to learn focus though and finish one at a time, but that doesn’t seem to be something I have in me. 😀 Good luck with your goals! I know you can do what you set your mind to.

I’ll keep you in mind for the beta offer! Thanks chickie. 🙂

I feel like such a slacker! Haha! 😀

I had certain “plans” for 2014 in place, in my head, but with the changes that occured on January 2, well, I’m rethinking those plans. That’s the problem with plotting, isn’t it? (Yes, I’m a pantser, too). But it’s all good. I’m just thinking BIGGER now!

Still… My best is writing a first draft in 5 months. And that was without distractions. I can’t imagine writing three in a year as well as editing and promoting. Whew!

    Like

    • Oh no you’re not! The new changes of the 2nd definitely give pause to “plans”, but I’m still gonna do what I can to fulfill these goals, or as many as I can. 🙂 My fastest was first draft in six weeks. It was rejected and now sits awaiting a rewrite. lol I don’t know that I can write two or three, plus the novellas, but it gives me something to aim for.

  15. That sure is impressive. I like that you’re made it into more of a 2 year plan-less daunting. I’m also reassured. I was talking to my daughter about my malfunctioning computer–that’s why I have 5 to 8 ‘manuscripts’ open at the same time. She claims this is the cause of the computer not cooperating. She couldn’t understand how I could work on so many different projects at the same time, and I couldn’t explain why–now I don’t have to because you do it too.

[sounds like a good subject for a blog post]

    All the best.

  18. That’s quite a list. Makes me feel like a slacker in hoping to promote my first two books that come out this year. Finish the next two books in the series and rework the series I wrote when I first started out, The first book is finished, but I’m sure needs some re-working now that I know more.
