Why Torture Myself? ~ Calisa Rhose #Goals #amwriting #amediting #MFRWAuthor

Osiyo~

Though it’s not Thursday, I thought now would be a good time to post my writing goals for the year. Yes, I’ve been procrastinating doing this. I’m a very good procrastinator. 😆 But, January is quickly slipping away and I need to do this before the New Year isn’t new so, here I am.

2014goalsSome of you may have read my goals last year, that HUGE 2-year plan I set out with last January 7th. What a disastrous mess that turned out to be! If you missed it, you can find that memorable post of My Writing Plan For 2024-2015 here. I warn you, take a deep breath before reading it! LOL

I’m doing it again. Yes, again! Why? Why torture myself? You might be thinking I’m a glutton for punishment, that I like to set myself up for sure failure. You’d be wrong. I did it for the same reasons, I guess, that I started edits on a five year old manuscript this weekend. Partly because I’d never set a long term plan and wanted to see if I could. Well, I can set goals. I did. And, as you can probably tell…I failed. Miserably.

I also did it, and am doing it again this year, to push myself, challenge myself. I didn’t set those goals last year for anyone but me. That’s why I do it. But, as with all new things, goals are meant to learn from, I think. And learn, I did!

What did I learn? For one, not to bite off more than I can chew. In other words, I need to set realistic goals, not what I want to do in one or in two years, but what I can do in that time. Can I realistically write four novellas and a full length manuscripts in 12 short months, plus revise another novella to re-publish? Obviously not when it takes me three months or more to write just one.

Did I accomplish any of my goals for 2014? Yes. I was successful in promoting Risk Factors after it’s new release with my new publisher, Kensington-Lyrical Press, in March. (Do you like how I did that? 🙂 )

I didn’t succeed in getting any other goals completed. Not even blogging once a week. In fact, I didn’t get one novella finished last year. Why? Because I overwhelmed myself. Good lord!! On top of the goals I set, I took on a new project, that isn’t finished yet, either.

Part of my failure is due to a burn out that began in May and didn’t fully end until October. I couldn’t write, didn’t even look at a ms much less work on any. I had to give myself permission to take a break and reevaluate my writing and regroup.

This year I’m taking a new direction with my writing. So, take a look at my new goals for 2015. Yeah…no more two year plans for this writer. But I will be diving into the Self Publishing pool this year, finally.

GOALS FOR 2015

1. Learn to mute phone when working!!! (can’t turn it off with fil here)

2. Blog at least once a week, aside from guests and regular UnCover Monday features

3. Edit completed full length ms, HW, in progress

4. Post some free reads on website

5. Write two novellas, both already started, but not the DDD novellas from last year

6. Self publish HW, already have a cover in the works and tentative date, May

7. Submit, or self publish at least one of two novellas, not sure which pub route I’ll take yet

8. Write a second full length ms*, my first paranormal, in progress (Juliet’s story in my 2015 goals)

9. Figure out a better marketing solution, for me, or at least a more productive way to use what I already have

* By ‘write a second ms’ I mean complete the first draft in 2015.

So, there you have it. Eight (not counting #1 🙂 ) simple, less stress-inducing goals. Still challenging, but hopefully, doable.

What about you? Will you be making goals (again) this year? How tough are you on yourself? Do you torture, or love yourself with your goals?

  1. I wish you well with your goals this year, Calisa. I am also reworking a long fantasy romance thriller I wrote ten years ago… planned to get it out in 2014 but that didn’t happen. I have many similar goals to yours, but I fear that committing them to paper will jinx me. So this year they remain only in my mind — where I can easily *forget* the ones that don’t pan out. I know, I’m sort of cheating…

    • I don’t think there is a way to cheat, Gemma. LOL But no matter how you lay it out, I hope your plans come together. 🙂 Thanks for the well wishes.

  2. I write out goal every year for all areas of my life. Sometimes I even meet them but I figure I do better than if I didn’t set any. It can be frustrating but even if they aren’t all met, they are in our subconscious and working behind the scenes.

    • That’s very true Susan. Even without written goals, mine are constantly behind my mind nagging at me, so why not put them out there where I can see them taunting me. lol.

  3. Great post, Calisa. I set goals as well, not quite as ambitious as you are, but setting new goals is one of the things I love about the New Year. I’m a firm believer that goals and change should happen as needed throughout the year, but the beginning of the year is a perfect time to start. As for my writing goals: 1) Finish my 6th novel, which is written, but needs a major overhaul, 2) Blog once a month (about anything I want, not just writing), and 3) Convert my soon to be published, Shallow Graves (coming out next month), into a screen play. I have other goal’s as well, mostly to do with happiness and health, but to me it’s important to make adjustments as needed to those goals throughout the year. Good luck, my friend. I hope you accomplish it all or at least feel satisfied with what you do accomplish.

    • Those are great goals, Tina! A screen play? You’ll have to tell me how you do that and how it works out! Good luck on that overhaul. I know it will be awesome once it’s finished. 🙂

  4. Sorry I’m late. Enjoyed the post. I am bad about setting goals that are a bit too ambitious, but I don’t beat myself up when I can’t reach them, I just try again. I’m working on a novella right now that is giving me fits, and it’s slowing down my production in other areas, but hopefully, it will click soon. Good luck with your goals, glad you’re writing again!

  5. Those are some great goals. I read over your last year goal list. Wow. I’d have burn out too. Well, I struggle to write even without a goal list like that. I applaud you writing again and hanging in. I’m working on doing the same. You go, Calisa!

    • I hope you took an oxygen tank with you to read the other list, Sandy! LOL I really don’t know what I was thinking when I did that. I feel much better with this year’s goals. Thanks for the good thoughts. I wish you success in your goals, written or not, in 2015! 🙂

Oh goodness, you are very brave! I love goals, but will not write them down. Life always sweeps in and brushes them out of the way. I started doing items on my “bucket” list instead. I’m such a workaholic, that I find it hard to take one day a week off from work, so I’ve decided to include a list of things I want to do–horseback riding lessons, archery lessons, learn Scottish Gaelic, Irish, or French, learn to make croissants from scratch, and a few other items. Yes, if I can manage one from this list, I will be happy. Oh, I almost forgot! I do want to push myself as a writer and squeeze in a novella. 🙂

All the best with your list, Calisa! It sounds amazing. 🙂

    • I love your bucket list Mary! I actually set out to teach myself Irish when I was a teen. About all I remember these days is moy muck, which if I spelled it right and remember correctly, means spotted pig. LOL I think it would be cool, and useful, to learn to make croissants from scratch. I’d be thrilled to learn how to make cake from scratch like my Nana used to.

Yes, life likes to clean up when I make goals. But I make them anyway. Odd since I’m terrible at keeping lists of any kind. 🙂 Thank you for stopping by! I know all of you who have are super busy with your own work and lives.

  7. I’m good at over goaling, but even if I don’t meet my list, I like having them to motivate me. I wish you the best of luck with your 2015 goals~ Lynn

    • That’s how I feel Lynn. But I way over goaled last year. I’d rather have at least a long shot at succeeding than none. lol Good luck with whatever you hope to do this next year. 🙂

Goals? Nothing written in concrete or by pen. I learned this past year, that no matter how productive and on target I can be, life can sling a curve ball faster than a comet and send the goals sailing over the fence 🙂 I am planning on finishing the second in my series of stories set in Galveston, title : Southern Breezes, The Veranda. Then hopefully moving to the next one. I figure if I can get two out this coming year, I’ll be a happy camper 🙂
I’m also doing a blog, even though I’m ‘again it. They’re not getting the traffic they used to. But, I’m going to do one periodically, as the mood hits. I have the first one completed, just waiting for a loose end to tie up.
That’s about as agenda-ish as I’m getting this year. I nod to the universe, the best laid plans of mice and men and all that ;):)
Great to see you this year, Calisa 🙂 Wishing you al the best with your goals! From your mouth to God’s ear 🙂 Lo

    • If anyone knows how life can sling my well laid plans, Lo, it’s definitely me. I never expected to hit high burn last year, but it took me out for over four months. But, I’ll plan anyway, and try to do my best. 🙂 I wish you all the luck with your books this year. I’m sure you can make your goals. I’ll be happy to read any blog post you share. Happy writing hun! 🙂
