CarpeDemon_JCMcKenzie05.19.15Excerpt:

The Demon’s grin widened. Standing a foot away from him with no room to maneuver and nothing to separate us, the serrated details of his shiny enamel glared at me.

My fingertips tingled as I started to shift.

Not fast enough.

The Demon lunged. His long nimble fingers closed around my neck as I shot my hands out, inside his arms, and dug my claws into his face. My elbows pushed against the insides of his arms. His hold should’ve weakened, but this Demon possessed uncanny strength. His frame stretched, growing to almost eight feet in height and giving his body an emaciated appearance. He pulled me close, his nose touching mine. I wrenched to the side, but my toes dangled above the floor.

“Bola sends his regards,” he said, his breath hitting my face.

My gums stung as fangs protruded and I hissed at him, ready to make the full change and get my fight on. I yanked on the mountain lion and spurred her into action.

“By all means, little nugget, shift into one of your animals.” He gnashed his sharp teeth together. “I love to rend the flesh of livestock, to mutilate the bodies of creatures, and to smash the bones of beasts.”

Calisa Rhose~Tuesday RoundUp presents~ Chrys Fey #ghosts #mfrwauthor

Osiyo~

Welcome one and all! Grab a beverage of choice, something sweet and sinful. No-no, not the men. What’s the matter with you? You know the hands-on rules… The guest gets first pick! 😉 Take a comfy seat for another, or a first, spin in the Round Pen.

I’m thrilled to welcome my wonderfully talented guest today, Chrys Fey, who is sharing her eBook, Ghost of Death with us!

chrysfeypicPlease show Chrys some real Ranch love!

Before I get to the nosy 5-3-4 part of this interview, tell us a bit about you.

My name is Chrys Fey and in case you’re wondering…that is a pen name. Chrys came from a nickname that my oldest friends call me, but I changed the spelling to make it more mystical. And Fey is a nickname used for a person thought to have supernatural qualities. Since the books I’ve been writing half my life all have supernatural elements, I thought Fey was perfect. And that is how “Chrys Fey” was born.

I love how you came up with your name! Okay, I’ll begin with five questions, then follow with three more, and end with four final ones.

My writing area at the moment is a corner of the couch in my living room. What does your writing space look like?

It’s a lot better since I was last at the Ranch and answered this question. It’s in a corner of my bedroom now next to a window with a lovely view of the tree in the front yard of my new house.

I love new houses. I’ll be moving into a new office soon too. For a lot of writers it’s a life-altering event coming up with titles and character names. Others it comes as naturally as breathing. Which is it for you?

It’s usually easy for me, but the title of “Ghost of Death” was originally Diary of a Dead Girl. Since I didn’t write it in the form of a diary and I’m also publishing “Witch of Death” later this month, I changed it. As for my characters’ names, the characters in “Ghost of Death” are named after people, so that was easy. *wink*

What advice would you offer aspiring and new writers?

Keep writing.

Keep dreaming.

Keep believing.

The constant shift of the industry makes me often scratch my head and ask ‘what next?’ So, what do you think it takes to be a successful author at the moment?

Do not overwhelm yourself. Stick with a few social media sites you like and stay active on

them, do a little marketing every day or at least a few times a week, and write no matter

what obstacles this ever-changing industry throws your way.

Oh, that’s good advice. Who would you like to meet in the publishing industry- dead or alive- and why?

J.K. Rowling. I’d like to have tea and biscuits with her and to talk about writing, books, and life in general.

It’s time for 3 in 1! I’ll ask the questions and you answer them in one word. 😆

Favorite animal?

TOO MANY!

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter?

Fall

Favorite food?

Italian

Well done! 🙂

Okay, Flash four. Ready?

What are you working on now?

Well, I’m going to be sending my publisher the sequel to Hurricane Crimes (with fingers crossed) very soon and I am working on book three! 😀

I have my copy of both these books and can’t wait to read them (some day). LOL What are you sharing today?

Ghost of Death!

GhostofDeath05.05.15

Jolie Montgomery, a twenty-one-year-old woman, wakes up in an alley next to her corpse. She has no memories of her murder or the night she died. She didn’t even see the killer’s face before he or she took her life. Wanting justice, Jolie seeks answers in the only way a ghost can…by stalking the lead detective on the case.

Avrianna Heavenborn is determined to find the person responsible for a young woman’s death. She gets closer to the killer’s identity with every clue she uncovers, and Jolie is with her every step of the way.

But if they don’t solve her murder soon, Jolie will be an earth-bound spirit forever.

I love her name. Where can we find you and your books?

Where will you be next?

Tomorrow I am visiting Julie Flanders. On Thursday, I’ll be stopping by Christine Rains’

blog. And Friday I’ll have fun posts at the blogs of Marlow Kelly, Medeia Sharif, and Kelly Hashway.

WitchofDeath-CFWitch of Death is also available for PRE-ORDER! 🙂

Detective Reid Sanders doesn’t believe in the supernatural, but when he’s faced with a crime scene that defies the laws of nature, he has no other choice but to start believing. And solving a magical murder involves working with a witch.

Liberty Sawyer embodies the look of your classic evil witch, so, it’s no surprise when she uncovers the murderer is a witch that she becomes Reid’s number one suspect. If she can’t convince him otherwise, more people could lose their lives to dark magic, including her.

Calisa Rhose presents ~ Sarah Grimm- Secondary Characters Who Demand Their Own Stories #MFRWAuthor #BlackPhoenixseries

Happy December!!!

I know I typically have Friday FanFare instead of guest posts on Friday, but Christmas is coming and I have my first pressy! My number one book boyfriend has escaped from authorland this week and is everywhere just for you to meet, so I have to introduce you to Dominic Price. *swoon*

So as a special event today, I invited Sarah Grimm to tell how Dom’s story came to be with a little taste of Dom’s and Rebecca’s sizzle, and where you can get your copy of Midnight Heat. I already have my copy and can’t wait to read it! 🙂

When I was writing After Midnight—Black Phoenix book 1—I honestly had no intention of creating a series. I had one story in my head, one where in the midst of wrapping up the hero and heroine’s happily-ever-after with a bright red bow, I would also give secondary character Dominic Price his. Then he walked onto the page and instantly stole my heart. I knew immediately he would need his own book. He was blunt, didn’t believe in lying and often said whatever he was thinking. He was funny—I’m a sucker for a man who makes me laugh—but also…wounded. There was a sadness to him. A deep sadness tied to a woman he loved desperately, but had walked away from: Rebecca Dahlman. I had to explore this—had to—and so Midnight Heat was born.

Writing Dominic’s story wasn’t easy. At times I was an interviewer asking questions of him, then rewording them when he wouldn’t give me an answer. At times a psychologist, studying his mind and behavior, digging for the reasoning behind his actions. Dom was afraid to trust me with his backstory, just as he was afraid to trust Rebecca, but eventually, I got it out of him. Then, I had to figure a way to help him win Rebecca back. In the end, he didn’t need my help after all.

***MH_cover

Rebecca pulled into her driveway to find Dominic leaning against the post of the front porch. It’d been a lousy week and the last thing she needed, the last possible thing she could deal with right now, was him. Yet here he was. Looking as sinfully gorgeous as ever.

His long black hair was messy, like he’d been running his fingers through it. Her own twitched with the need to bury her hands in his hair and pull him to her. Pull him in tight, setting aside everything that stood between them. Trusting this time would be different.

For a long moment the temptation was so great she couldn’t breathe. She walked past him, used her key to unlock the door but didn’t open it. Exhaustion pulled at her, made her limbs heavy and her eyes burn. The double shift she’d just come off had been difficult, made more so by the arrival of Mr. Masters – the little boy’s father. He hadn’t said anything, just stood against a light pole outside the emergency entrance. In a fashion eerily similar to the way Dominic stood now.

It had taken her the entire drive home to shake off the trickle of alarm from between her shoulder blades.

Unable to summon the most basic of manners, she sighed. “Not tonight, Dom.” Tonight she felt far too exposed and vulnerable. “Honestly, I don’t have the strength for another go around with you.”

He looked her over slowly, studying her without a word. She knew what she looked like, had seen her reflection in the mirror after getting cleaned up at the hospital. Dark circles of fatigue beneath bloodshot eyes, her naturally pale skin more drawn than normal. She couldn’t hold her tongue when she was tired. No doubt he’d use that to his advantage.

“Are you okay?”

The fact that he asked, after everything they’d said to each other, nearly brought tears to her eyes. No. “Yes.”

He was quiet a moment, then blew out a breath. “I was hoping to have that talk you wanted, but I can see tonight’s not the night.”

She allowed herself to relax a bit. “It’s really not.”

“Just so you know, I’ll go home tonight, but I’m not going away.”

“What does that mean?”

Dominic gazed deep into her eyes. “I want a second chance, Rebecca.” His tone was a dark promise that curled around her and had her pulse kicking hard. “A chance to show you how much I’ve changed. To be what you want me to be; a lover and a friend.”

Heart in her throat she could only whisper. “For how long?”

“As long as you’ll have me.”

She closed her eyes and swallowed back the ache, the longing. Yes, cried her heart. Oh please, yes. Her head refused to believe. “Dom,” she murmured.

He didn’t speak. Nor did he walk away. Instead, he stepped closer. So close his breath brushed her temple, his body heat warmed her. She opened her eyes, tipped her head up to see into his. He stood close enough to touch her, only he didn’t. “Your best friend’s name is Karmen.”

Confusion scattered her thoughts. “How?”

“You’re wrong. I met her once – the same night I met you. She’s Latina, pretty but…I barely remember her.” His eyes darkened to mirror the night sky. “I was too blinded by you.”

“Dominic.” She lifted a hand and settled it in the center of his chest, feeling the hard muscle as well as the heat—traced her fingers over one pec and his body tightened.

Still, he didn’t touch her.

“You listen to classical music all the time. So much it used to drive me bonkers. But only if you’re happy. When you’re sad, you listen to the blues.”

Or his. She’d grown quite fond of Black Phoenix’s music over the years.

“I don’t recall what make or model your car was, just that it was a bit dodgy and smelled like cheese.” His chuckle vibrated up her arm.

God, how was she supposed to resist this? He was giving her everything she’d demanded of him the other night. All the answers she’d accused him of not caring enough to have. Rebecca leaned in, pressing closer, absorbing his scent, his proximity, and still his arms remained at his sides. He wasn’t going to make it easy on her. Anything that might happen, everything was being left up to her.

“I had a kink in my ass for a week after that first night.” His gaze fell to hers as she laughed. “I would do anything to make you laugh.” His voice was low, raw, as he reverently touched her cheek. “I would do anything to make sure I never make you cry again. I don’t want to be what makes you cry, Rebecca. Not anymore.”

Her body wouldn’t stop shaking. “Dominic.”

“I miss you so much. I miss us. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t regret walking away from you.”

It was too much to take in at once. Rebecca couldn’t move, and her vocal cords seemed to be temporarily useless. She ended up just standing there, as her heart took a hard leap against her ribs and hope blossomed.

Calisa Rhose and Tuesday Roundup presents ~ 30 Seconds by Chrys Fey #MFRWAuthor #romanticsuspense

Osiyo~

Welcome one and all! Grab a beverage of choice, something sweet and sinful. No-no, not the men. What’s the matter with you? You know the hands-on rules… The guest gets first pick! 😉 Take a comfy seat for another, or a first, spin in the Round Pen.

chrysfeypicI’m thrilled to welcome my wonderfully talented guest today, Chrys Fey, who is sharing her book, 30 Seconds with us!

Please show Chrys some real Ranch love!

Before I get too nosy, tell us a bit about you.

My writing area at the moment is a corner of the couch in my living room. What does your writing space look like?

My writing area is also in my living room. I have my desk positioned in a corner where I can look out the window and my back is to the rest of the room. Right now my desk is decorated in the spirit of autumn, but soon it’ll look like a winter wonderland.

For a lot of writers it’s a life-altering event coming up with titles and character names. For others it comes as naturally as breathing. Which is it for you?

Naming my books and characters comes easy to me. Usually. For a long time I referred to 30 Seconds, my romantic-suspense novella, as another title based after my characters’ last names. My heroine is Dani Hart and my hero is Blake Herro, so I thought I’d call their story, Hearts and Heroes, but I changed my mind when my favorite band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, inspired me.

Interesting. What advice would you offer aspiring and new writers?

Never give up! There were many times when rejections got me down and I wonder ask, “When will it be my turn?” But I continued to push toward my dream, knowing that I wouldn’t have the story ideas circulating in my head if I wasn’t meant to publish them. And I believe the same for you!

Always sound advice. Persistence is key, but the constant shift of the industry makes me often scratch my head and ask ‘what next?’ So, what do you think it takes to be a successful author at the moment?

At the moment, social media presence…If you’re not on at least 1-2 social media sites then readers won’t know about you, and you want readers to know about you!

I agree. As much as I don’t get, so don’t particularly like, social media, we have to put our best foot forward. We have put ourselves out there each day. That part I don’t mind. 🙂

Who would you like to meet in the publishing industry- dead or alive- and why?

JK Rowling. I’d love to sit with her talk about writing, our books, and life over a cup of tea. She seems like a wonderful person who I’d get along with real well.

It’s time for 3 in 1! I’ll ask the questions and you answer them in one word. 😆

Favorite animal? Giraffe

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter? Fall

Favorite food? Pasta

Well done! 🙂

Okay, Flash four. Ready? YES!

What are you working on now?

Currently I am working on the sequel to Hurricane Crimes and a short story for readers who enjoy 30 Seconds.

What are you sharing today?

My romantic-suspense novella 30 Seconds.30Seconds_ChrysFey11.18.14

When Officer Blake Herro agreed to go undercover in the Mob, he thought he understood the risks. But he’s made mistakes and now an innocent woman has become their target. He’s determined to protect her at all costs.

The Mob’s death threat turns Dr. Dani Hart’s life upside down, but there is one danger she doesn’t anticipate. As she’s dodging bullets, she’s falling in love with Blake. With danger all around them, will she and Blake survive and have a happy ending, or will the Mob make good on their threat?

***

Where can we find you and your books?

30 Seconds can be found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, KOBO, and The Wild Rose Press.

And I can be found on Facebook and Goodreads. I also have a blog called Write with Fey.

Where will you be next?

On Thursday I’ll be visiting Barbara Edwards, another Rose from The Wild Rose Press.

Chrys Fey’s Question: If the Mob was after you, what would you do and where would you go to stay safe?

Ooh, great question. I’m going to wait to see what others say. 🙂

Thank you so much for playing along, Chrys! Wishing you much luck with your book and writing. I hope you’ll come visit again one day.

Calisa Rhose presents ~ JM Stewart with Her Knight in Shining Leather

Calisa Rhose and Friday Fanfare Welcomes ~ Keri Neal

And Hopeless…

This is a special edition of FFF as I help Keri Neal with her KeriNealHopeless_tourbadge11.15.13 blog tour. Please enjoy her hard work!

How did your writing journey begin?

I wrote a lot in middle and high school, mainly because that is when I became a big reader. I never really had dreams of getting something published. In fact, it wasn’t until just a few years ago when my friend Cheryl asked if I would like to write a book with her. And we did, we wrote two books actually. Neither will ever see the light of day, but I learned so much from the experience.

Tell us three things about you-the writer-readers wouldn’t typically know.

1. I am an only child, hence the voices in my head.

2. I will never go on a cruise ship.

3. I majored in Physical Therapy during my first year of college.

It all began…

when I was in church one day. The Flightless series is not a religious series, but for whatever reason Pen speaks to me a lot at church. Maybe it’s because I believe he is good at heart, despite being uncelestial in his actions. He is not your typical guardian angel, obviously. But his intentions are good and I strongly believe this makes him a good human.

Where did you get the premise for this book?

I already mentioned church. I also wanted to add that Pen represents everything I miss from YA heroes. So often I read the male leads in these YA books and I think, “This boy is too perfect. Why can’t they write about guys that are believable?” I think I know the answer to that one: We want our heroes to sweep us off our feet. I get that. But Cheryl would agree with me when I say that boys are stupid. They do stupid things and yet we love them anyway. Why not write them that way?

HopelessOn her seventeenth birthday, Jade is filled with hope for the future. She and her boyfriend Pen are in love, she is finishing her final year of high school, and she is finally safe from the Fallen, who wanted her blood to fulfill an age-old prophesy. Pen is not as comfortable with the truce they made to protect her, so he makes a new deal with the Arches and leaves Jade alone.

But not for long.

A new Guardian is assigned to protect Jade. Blake is rude and offensive, his methods unconventional. Because of his dedication to her she trusts him with her life. Best of all, he knows about the Surge—her telekinetic ability—and is eager to teach her how to control her power. With Blake’s help, Jade learns she can defend herself, with or without the Arches protection, against the evil forces that want her blood.

Then . . . Pen comes back.

He doesn’t like the idea of someone else looking out for Jade, but an army of evil is on its way to destroy her, and Jade needs all the help she can get.

***

What stands out about this story that made writing it different for you?

I didn’t expect to bond with Pen so easily. He was so easy to write, I could have given him his own book!

Were there any difficult challenges or special subject matter you came across while writing this book?

I struggled with whether or not to have Jade and Pen “couple” in the first book. Lovey dovey scenes make me nauseous, but I knew going into this series that I was going to have to consummate Jade and Pen’s relationship at some point. I’m still struggling with it, but I hope the reader will bare with me.

What about this book would make us want to read it more than others of similar taste?

I love the imperfect hero/heroine. Someone I can relate to, care about. I hope Pen is unlike the other angels in similar series. I feel he is very different, but the reader’s opinion is what’s important 🙂

What do you want readers to take away from this book?

It takes all kinds. Although I don’t believe in love at first sight, I do believe in soulmates.

Tell us about the finished book. Is there anything special we might not know after reading it?

Krista’s original name was “Zoe”. Then I thought it would be fun to hold a drawing and name her after the winner. So that his how Krista go to be named, after Krista Ames.

Where can readers find you and your books?

Calisa Rhose hosts Barbara Edwards and Journey of the Magi

 Osiyo~

I’m honored to have Babara Edwards take over the round pen today with her new Christmas story! Find a chill-chair and get comfortable as Barbara tells us about this book. 🙂 The floor is yours, Barbara.

Thanks, Calisa, for hosting me. Journey of the Magi is #free on #kindle today.  http://amzn.com/B00ES5DZEQ

Christmas 2012 034BEThe idea for this Holiday romance came while I was setting up the manger for Christmas. Over the years I’ve collected more than the basic Holy Family, shepherds and wise-men. There are several cows and a calf, a dozen sheep, the sheep dog, ducks, chickens, deer, rabbits, I could go on but the list is too long. I have two sets of Magi and use them both. One is fairly new the other belonged to my Mother and her Mother before her. They are plaster of paris, the paint is chipped and they look like they had a long hard, journey.  I love them because they remind me of my childhood. Somehow the ideas connected in my imagination.
My heroine is a loving mother who dearly wants to give her children the happy home she remembers from her childhood. My hero is a nice guy with a soft streak for those down on their luck. Journey of the Magi is for everyone who longs for a happy holiday.

BarbaraEdwardsI’m Barbara Edwards and a native New Englander. I’m a graduate of the University of Hartford with a Master’s degree in Public Administration. I write poetry for myself and novels when I need to tell a longer tale. I’m fascinated by the past so naturally turned to writing historical romance. The dark paranormal stories evolve from nightmares. The romance comes from my belief in people’s basic goodness and longing for love.

I lived in Florida for several years and am past president of the Central Florida Romance Writers and a member of Romance Writers of America.

When I returned to Connecticut, I founded the Charter Oak Romance Writers, a Chapter of Romance Writers of America, along with several close friends.

My husband is a retired Police Sergeant. We share an interest Civil War re-enacting and travel the Eastern states to participate in events. I love visiting museums, galleries and battle sites, gathering information for my stories.

I taught Romance Writing at Manchester Community college for three years.

I’m fond of gardening and growing antique roses with limited success.

Most of my exercise is when my Belgian Shepherd, Dixie, demands a walk.

Journey of the Magi blurb

Widow Noel Martin never breaks promises, and she promised her kids they’d have Christmas at her childhood home in Connecticut. But driving across country takes money. Noel is broke when a snowstorm blows them into a tiny Minnesota café owned by a man who can change her mind. She accepts his offer of a job. Despite her attraction to him, she makes it clear she is only temporary help.

Dan Longstreet isn’t adopting any more strays, but he needs a waitress. Dan works so hard to make his café a success, he doesn’t have time for love. Though Noel’s slender blonde beauty stuns him and her two adorable children tug at his heart, he denies how they threaten to change his life.

When tragedy strikes, their new-found love is the first victim. Noel can’t stay and Dan can’t leave. Will their journey be the gift that reunites them?

Journey of the Magi excerpt:

JourneyOfTheMagi_BE

“Is that job still open?”

“I need a waitress.” His rich voice woke tingles of awareness that she’d forgotten, or maybe never knew.

“Is that a yes or a no?” she asked impatiently. These unfamiliar feelings were scary and unwelcome. She was too tired to be diplomatic and this job was too important.

“What are you going to do with them?” He jutted his chin toward her children.

“I, I d-d-don’t know,” Noel stammered before she slumped onto the nearest stool. Leaning forward onto her elbows, she looked at her clasped hands. “I didn’t plan that far.”

“Humph!”
