Are you having fun? Day 4! Week one NANO back stretch! #nanowrimo2017 #mfrwauthor #amwriting #lovemyjob

Osiyo~

I love today’s Silver James NaNo badge! If it looks like coffee, I’m on board. Seriously!

Why not go let her know what you think by clicking any of the badges from any of my NaNo posts.

Writing is work. Hard work at times. No one who ever tried to write, seriously write, anything will tell you it’s easy. At least, I won’t. But at any job, whether you write full time or work at a job place, you should be able to have some fun, be able to enjoy the job. If you can’t, why do it? While working at my retail day job over the last two years, I did not particularly like my blah job where I had to wear solidblackonblack (my least favorite color) every day (except on OU game days I was allowed to rock the crimson 😉 ), but I still had fun when I could.

This last year was spent using one arm because I injured my right shoulder and had to wear a sling at work until surgery. But even though I was in pain more often than not, and hated the painful bi-weekly PT I had to do, I still tried to have fun with my co-workers, whom I loved.

Writing, for me, is like that. I have to enjoy what I’m writing at any stage, yes, even through a gajillion repeat edits. 🙂 Don’t we all just love those like an ingrown toenail? LOL

After all, if we don’t love what we’re doing, again, why bother?

What about you? Do you write because you love it? Or, maybe you’re more like me. Even though I enjoy writing, sometimes ask myself what the point is when there is so much tough competition out there. All those others are so, so much better than I am, right?

No. Not even a tiny bit right.

But writing is a challenge, and I write because I can’t NOT write. It’s in my veins, it’s who I am.

I’m. A. Writer.

I love that about me.

So keep writing. If you love it, don’t let anything discourage you. And if you’re NaNoing, buddy me! If you aren’t, that’s okay. Thanks for reading and commenting. Who knows? Maybe we’ll be buddies next November!

For now—

Day 4- this blog post (and only because I’d written most of it last night, too).

0 NaNo words

Hubby had me helping him today, so I planned to write until bedtime (or 1 am, which ever came first). Again, why I avoid planning very often. My pc suddenly went to a blue screen shortly after writing this post last night, so the ‘0’ stands for this day. Thankfully, the blue warning screen seems to be resolved after a restart. I’d forgotten time fell back last night, now I’m wondering if that had anything to do with the blue screen? At any rate, I didn’t get to post this so it’s a day late, which means I need to spend time this evening writing today’s day 5 post. That’s fine. I’m also trying to get UnCover Monthly put together and scheduled to go live at Midnight+01, but it’s still early. Plenty of time! 🙂

Yesterday I ended up doing a restore on my pc to try to get rid of spammy game sites that kept ghosting open with every link I clicked on, anywhere. At times there would be upwards to ten individual windows open! Grrr So far, so good. Keeping fingers crossed. 🙂

In the meantime, I can always use more NaNo buddies, so hit me up! For those doing NaNo, how is your week shaping up? Better than mine I’d guess. 😛

Dodadaghovi~

PS. For anyone who is new (or maybe forgot), or merely curious, osiyo means “hello” and dodadaghovi loosely translates to “until we meet again” in Cherokee, of which I’m one fourth and proud. 🙂

Book III in The Golden Key Legacy…
by
AJ Nuest

AWizardRisesThe homecoming celebration held in honor of Princess Faedrah is fraught with
perilous frustration. Her nightmares have returned thricefold and, to her
horror, a horrendous blight has spread like a plague throughout the kingdom. Compounding
her worries, Rhys’ arrival in her world has been welcomed with the exact horror-filled
reaction she expected. Her beloved has been cast into the dungeons, and no amount
of arguing with the king and queen will prove he’s her fated love.

Magical powers were supposed to be a gift, or so Rhys McEleod had always believed. Too
bad the second he landed in Faedrah’s world the legacy he inherited slammed
into his body like a weight. He’s got zero control and his constant visions of
Faedrah fighting an evil entity aren’t helping. At least her parents made the
right decision and stuck him away someplace safe. Until he can figure out his
next move, prove himself an ally and uncover the clues to stopping Faedrah’s
nightmares, he’s got no choice but to wait…and learn exactly what he’s become.

It’s a $0.99 SALE!!!

Since the day of her birth, Princess Faedrah Austiere has been defined by her place
within the kingdom. As the single heir to the half-blood gypsy king and his
prophesied white queen, she is fiercely protected, shuttered inside an ivory
castle and well-trained in the art of war. Yet neither her obligations as
future queen nor the black infestation threatening her kingdom fail to hinder
the mysterious pull of the antique armoire hidden in her parents’ bedchamber. And
stealing the golden key for a leap through time is the only way to confront the
dark lord haunting her dreams.

One face. The image of one defiant, relentless woman has been stuck in Rhys
McEleod’s head ever since he was old enough paint her luscious curves on the
canvas. But the day she walks into his life off the street—sexier than hell and
itching for a fight—he’s not convinced she’s the same women he’s envisioned
since childhood. That is, not until he spots the golden key around her neck—an
object he’d never fully shown in any of his paintings.

Now if he could just persuade his lovely muse he’s not the enemy. Unless the
elusive Faedrah Austiere learns to trust him, he’ll never have her in his
bed—the one place he’s convinced she belongs.

The second Faedrah Austiere walked into his life off the canvas, everything in Rhys
McEleod’s world stopped making sense. Not only does her story sound like a
Grimm’s fairy tale, evidently he’s been cast as the villain. If that isn’t
enough, the mirror inside that old, beat up armoire at her uncle’s condo is
supposedly a doorway to another world. Ever since the pathway opened, something
inside him has seemed…off. If what his muse says is true, they are headed for
an epic showdown, but he isn’t about to let her go. Nothing is more important than
Faedrah’s protection, even if her parents refuse to accept him.

Though certain their fates are bound by more than the golden key Princess Faedrah
wears around her neck, it is paramount Rhys’ true identity be kept secret.
Should news of his bloodline ever reach her kingdom, their entire quest to save
her people could be lost. Their only hope to prove his loyalty is to steal the
map to the dark lord’s Crystal Crypt. Yet her a plan endangers her beloved more
than the accusations he faces in her kingdom and, to escape evil’s grasp, she
and Rhys must take a leap of faith beyond her wildest imagination.

Pre-Order the Final Installment in this epic time travel fantasy romance!

Rhys had one job to do. One measly errand that shouldn’t have been a problem, given
the nature of his powers. But when an old enemy reappears, detailing the result
of his actions, Rhys is forced to make a choice between a future with Faedrah
or dying before his time. Frustrated and out of options, he agrees to her
suggestion they to leap forward in time to the future…even though a good chance
exists his powers will be nothing but a memory in his world. Flying blind on a
wing and a prayer, they prepare to fight for everything they love against a
wizard of insurmountable power.

Faedrah does her best to gather their closest allies. The sides are squared in a war to
control the future of both worlds. With the stakes so high, only one advantage
has been cast in their favor. The sigil of utmost protection inherent in Rhys’
signature. If not enough to thwart the evil awaiting at the Austiere gates, she
could find herself imprisoned in the future, while her kingdom and all those
she has sworn to protect are lost to the mists of time.

Calisa Rhose presents ~ Sarah Grimm- Secondary Characters Who Demand Their Own Stories #MFRWAuthor #BlackPhoenixseries

Happy December!!!

I know I typically have Friday FanFare instead of guest posts on Friday, but Christmas is coming and I have my first pressy! My number one book boyfriend has escaped from authorland this week and is everywhere just for you to meet, so I have to introduce you to Dominic Price. *swoon*

So as a special event today, I invited Sarah Grimm to tell how Dom’s story came to be with a little taste of Dom’s and Rebecca’s sizzle, and where you can get your copy of Midnight Heat. I already have my copy and can’t wait to read it! 🙂

When I was writing After Midnight—Black Phoenix book 1—I honestly had no intention of creating a series. I had one story in my head, one where in the midst of wrapping up the hero and heroine’s happily-ever-after with a bright red bow, I would also give secondary character Dominic Price his. Then he walked onto the page and instantly stole my heart. I knew immediately he would need his own book. He was blunt, didn’t believe in lying and often said whatever he was thinking. He was funny—I’m a sucker for a man who makes me laugh—but also…wounded. There was a sadness to him. A deep sadness tied to a woman he loved desperately, but had walked away from: Rebecca Dahlman. I had to explore this—had to—and so Midnight Heat was born.

Writing Dominic’s story wasn’t easy. At times I was an interviewer asking questions of him, then rewording them when he wouldn’t give me an answer. At times a psychologist, studying his mind and behavior, digging for the reasoning behind his actions. Dom was afraid to trust me with his backstory, just as he was afraid to trust Rebecca, but eventually, I got it out of him. Then, I had to figure a way to help him win Rebecca back. In the end, he didn’t need my help after all.

***MH_cover

Rebecca pulled into her driveway to find Dominic leaning against the post of the front porch. It’d been a lousy week and the last thing she needed, the last possible thing she could deal with right now, was him. Yet here he was. Looking as sinfully gorgeous as ever.

His long black hair was messy, like he’d been running his fingers through it. Her own twitched with the need to bury her hands in his hair and pull him to her. Pull him in tight, setting aside everything that stood between them. Trusting this time would be different.

For a long moment the temptation was so great she couldn’t breathe. She walked past him, used her key to unlock the door but didn’t open it. Exhaustion pulled at her, made her limbs heavy and her eyes burn. The double shift she’d just come off had been difficult, made more so by the arrival of Mr. Masters – the little boy’s father. He hadn’t said anything, just stood against a light pole outside the emergency entrance. In a fashion eerily similar to the way Dominic stood now.

It had taken her the entire drive home to shake off the trickle of alarm from between her shoulder blades.

Unable to summon the most basic of manners, she sighed. “Not tonight, Dom.” Tonight she felt far too exposed and vulnerable. “Honestly, I don’t have the strength for another go around with you.”

He looked her over slowly, studying her without a word. She knew what she looked like, had seen her reflection in the mirror after getting cleaned up at the hospital. Dark circles of fatigue beneath bloodshot eyes, her naturally pale skin more drawn than normal. She couldn’t hold her tongue when she was tired. No doubt he’d use that to his advantage.

“Are you okay?”

The fact that he asked, after everything they’d said to each other, nearly brought tears to her eyes. No. “Yes.”

He was quiet a moment, then blew out a breath. “I was hoping to have that talk you wanted, but I can see tonight’s not the night.”

She allowed herself to relax a bit. “It’s really not.”

“Just so you know, I’ll go home tonight, but I’m not going away.”

“What does that mean?”

Dominic gazed deep into her eyes. “I want a second chance, Rebecca.” His tone was a dark promise that curled around her and had her pulse kicking hard. “A chance to show you how much I’ve changed. To be what you want me to be; a lover and a friend.”

Heart in her throat she could only whisper. “For how long?”

“As long as you’ll have me.”

She closed her eyes and swallowed back the ache, the longing. Yes, cried her heart. Oh please, yes. Her head refused to believe. “Dom,” she murmured.

He didn’t speak. Nor did he walk away. Instead, he stepped closer. So close his breath brushed her temple, his body heat warmed her. She opened her eyes, tipped her head up to see into his. He stood close enough to touch her, only he didn’t. “Your best friend’s name is Karmen.”

Confusion scattered her thoughts. “How?”

“You’re wrong. I met her once – the same night I met you. She’s Latina, pretty but…I barely remember her.” His eyes darkened to mirror the night sky. “I was too blinded by you.”

“Dominic.” She lifted a hand and settled it in the center of his chest, feeling the hard muscle as well as the heat—traced her fingers over one pec and his body tightened.

Still, he didn’t touch her.

“You listen to classical music all the time. So much it used to drive me bonkers. But only if you’re happy. When you’re sad, you listen to the blues.”

Or his. She’d grown quite fond of Black Phoenix’s music over the years.

“I don’t recall what make or model your car was, just that it was a bit dodgy and smelled like cheese.” His chuckle vibrated up her arm.

God, how was she supposed to resist this? He was giving her everything she’d demanded of him the other night. All the answers she’d accused him of not caring enough to have. Rebecca leaned in, pressing closer, absorbing his scent, his proximity, and still his arms remained at his sides. He wasn’t going to make it easy on her. Anything that might happen, everything was being left up to her.

“I had a kink in my ass for a week after that first night.” His gaze fell to hers as she laughed. “I would do anything to make you laugh.” His voice was low, raw, as he reverently touched her cheek. “I would do anything to make sure I never make you cry again. I don’t want to be what makes you cry, Rebecca. Not anymore.”

Her body wouldn’t stop shaking. “Dominic.”

“I miss you so much. I miss us. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t regret walking away from you.”

It was too much to take in at once. Rebecca couldn’t move, and her vocal cords seemed to be temporarily useless. She ended up just standing there, as her heart took a hard leap against her ribs and hope blossomed.

Osiyo~

It’s Verterans Day and I offer a prayer to all those who do and have served in the military in any capacity. The Ranch has our flag flying proud regardless of the storms Mother Nature has battered parts of the country with.

Speaking of Mother Nature, I want to share a little of my weekend. I’ve said I’m gonna be a grandmother again. This one will be our fifth granddaughter. Where’s the beef, hell! I wanna know WHERE THE BOYS ARE?!!? This baby will be my oldest granddaughter, Andee’s (who lives with hubby and me) half sister, by our middle girl.

We had the baby shower this weekend- and as is becoming my new ‘bad’ habit since my camera broke in June, I forgot to borrow a one. Thank goodness for camera phones.

What is Skinbound? Ask Anna Kittrell ~ Calisa Rhose

Osiyo~

I’m so happy to have fellow TWRP author, friend and fellow OKRWA member, Anna Kittrell on The Ranch today!

We are also sister Scrimshaw Doll authors. Her new book, Skinbound comes years after Home and though her actual book follows others after mine, it also connects directly to Home in a small way.

I dragged Anna here to torture I mean ask some questions to let you get to know her some.

  1. Anna, please list your absolute necessities in order to write at your best.
  • I need plenty of teeny-tiny spiral notepads, on which I write scene ideas continuously. I crumple up each page and throw it away as I weave notes into my story. I love that part. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment.
  • A quiet surrounding is essential when I’m in a creative mindset. When working on scenes and dialogue, I physically isolate myself from the rest of my household or plug into white noise to minimalize distractions. Other writing activities such as character sketches or light outlining, I can manage on the sofa with other family members around.
  • I rise early and workout with exercise DVDs. Jennifer Galardi is my favorite instructor. Sweating first thing in the morning gets my blood and creativity pumping.
  • A few moments of quiet time, reflection, and thanking God for the day ahead gives me fresh focus and strength for what the day brings.
  • A printed calendar for my characters! As I learned the hard way, character timelines have a habit of twisting, turning, and tying themselves in knots. Pretty soon you find yourself burying folks who aren’t even dead yet. LOL. Lesson learned. Now I always print out at least a three month calendar to write the activities of my characters on. The sad part is, that while my characters’ calendars are filled to bursting with interesting and exciting events…my own is markedly blank.

Your process sounds interesting, Anna. I wish I had the motivation to work out any time. LOL

  1. Which comes first for you—plot or characters?

Normally, the idea for a plotline surfaces right along with visions of my main characters.

  1. What aspect of writing comes easy to you?  What is difficult?

The positive feedback I’ve received from readers and contest judges, hopefully means I write believable characters. Creating relatable people with extraordinary circumstances, then placing them in realistic settings is my passion.

Harder for me is executing an action I know little about—no matter how simple. For example, in Skinbound, my hero, Cabin, borrows a boat from his friend Richard. To get the vessel into the lake, the truck hauling the boat trailer had to be backed to the dock, then the boat had to be unhitched and guided into the water. Seemed easy enough. An hour and a half of research and two You Tube videos later, and Cabin and Richard finally had the boat in the water. To avoid making frivolous errors, I research even the most elementary tasks before writing them into my story. A little time invested now saves much embarrassment later. Keeps me from putting the trailer before the boat, so to speak.

LOL Great idea. I do that with certain things too. Of course, when I research it is usually hours before I get back to write what I was researching for… :/

  1. What is your writing routine?

In the summer months I rise early, enjoy the exercise and quiet time I mentioned earlier, shower, dress, then sit down to write. I write three or four hours at a time, have a short break, then write another three or four hours. Unfortunately, my writer’s dream-life comes to a screeching halt in August, when I return to work in the public school system. For the ten months that follow, my writing routine is hit or miss, catch it when I can, lunch hours, after work and weekends. I do, however, love the middle school secretary job I’ve performed for twelve years, and plan to keep my feet planted firmly under that desk until I can rest them fulltime beneath my own.

  1. What inspires you?

Strangely, I don’t know what inspires me until the ‘spark’ happens. Epiphanies strike from all-but-forgotten events in my childhood, idle conversation I’ve overheard in department stores, comments I’ve read on Facebook, my most embarrassing moments, and polite small talk. Many times I am inspired by the simple question, “What if?”

Some fun questions:

  1. Who or what would you walk over hot coals, climb a mountain, or swim an ocean to get to and why?

My husband, Tim. We have been together since I was fifteen years old, and I think the two of us have already done everything on your list. We’ve grown up together, and managed to keep from growing apart. I can’t imagine life without him, and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to live in the world if he wasn’t in it. He also gave me my two, astonishing, practically grown children, Evan and Brandilyn.

A true love story. And you celebrated your anniversary recently. Congrats again.

  1. Favorite television shows?

The SyFy network’s series ‘Face Off,’ in which contestants are judged by their ability to apply special effects makeup is my favorite show—I follow it faithfully. I also love to watch ‘Chopped’ on the Food Network. Personally, the only makeup I apply is the kind I slather on my face each morning, and I rarely cook anything more exotic than fried chicken. But there is something deeply gratifying about watching people do the things they are truly passionate about. No matter what that something is.

We talked about Face Off being your fave show. I’m not a foodie, so I just don’t ‘get’ shows that are food centered…though I love hell’s Kitchen! Weird. I think it’s mostly Gordon Ramsey that draws me in there. J

  1. Salty, sweet, or both?

Salty. I’m a Ruffles with French onion dip, queso and tortilla chip kind of gal.

Me too on certain days. Love PayDay candy bar. 😛 Now share a little about you.

Anna Kittrell has written stories for as long as she can remember. She still has most of her tattered creations—leftovers she was unable to sell on the playground for a dime—written in childish handwriting on notebook paper, bound with too many staples. Her love of storytelling has grown throughout the years, and she is thrilled her tales are now worth more than ten cents.

Growing up in small town Oklahoma, Anna spent many a summer day on the lakeshores she often writes about. Today, she works as a middle school secretary in her beloved hometown, where she resides with her high school sweetheart-turned-husband, Tim, and their two practically grown children, Evan and Brandilyn. She still loves visiting those muddy red lakeshores of her childhood, when she’s not too busy writing about them instead.

Blurb:

An ancient scrimshaw doll—does its gypsy magic protect or destroy?

As a child, Darcy Vaughan cowered beneath the malice of her twin sister, Scarlett. Now, Scarlett is back and Darcy hopes to establish the sisterly bond she’s always longed for. Instead, Scarlett tries to destroy Darcy’s life—and her new relationship with the town doctor.

Dr. Cabin Creighton returned to his hometown near Lake Chickasha, Oklahoma to take over his father’s practice. One look at Darcy, and Cabin wants nothing more than to love her forever. But a guilty heart and memories of his deceased wife are holding him back.

When someone from Scarlett’s past reappears, bad things start to happen. Darcy and Cabin struggle to keep their love alive, but as danger draws closer, Darcy finds herself once more at her sister’s mercy, with nothing but the yellowed bones of an ancient doll to protect her.

Excerpt:

“Really? This is how you treat your sister? Your twin?” Scarlett pushed past Darcy, into the living room.

“What—”

“You promised to check on me. I had a coughing spasm and very well could have died in that house all by myself.” She shook a cigarette from her pack, looked around the room, then slid it back in.

“May I intervene?” Cabin asked, his piercing gaze aimed at Scarlett. “You’re perfectly fine. I would have sent you to the hospital if I’d thought otherwise. As for the coughing spasm…you can blame those cigarettes for that.”

“Thank you, Dr. Drew. I’ll check into Celebrity Rehab right away.” She cackled, her breath reeking of alcohol. She turned to Darcy, snatching the doll from her hand. “Where did you get this?” she demanded. “How many crap-filled dumpsters did you have to dive into before you found the ridiculous thing? They should’ve buried these dried up bones right along with that crotchety old bat’s.” She pumped the doll’s legs in a suggestive motion and laughed, holding it from reach as Darcy grabbed for it.

Cabin circled Scarlett’s wrists with one hand, twisting the doll free with the other, and handed it to Darcy.

“My, you are a strong one.” Scarlett batted her lashes over bloodshot eyes. “I can certainly see why my sister…my twin sister…has such a bad case of Cabin fever.” She turned on her stilettoed heel and staggered through the doorway, onto the porch. “I hope you can remedy that, doctor.” She laughed as Cabin shut the door.

Finally! I can see! ~ Calisa Rhose

Osiyo~

A lot of you know how long I’ve been waiting, working and waiting, for my second book to publish. Some of you probably know of the tedium I went through with Perfect Dr. Viv before Piper Denna and Lyrical Press, Inc. contracted it this past May, and the new title change. Many of you even know I’ve been biting my nails waiting through round after round of edits for a cover reveal.

Well, I won’t make you wait any longer. Please help me celebrate the awesome job artist Valerie Tibbs did for me.

I present the cover for–

Risk FactorsDue March 2013

YAY!

Love, like life, is not without risk.

BLURB- Veterinarian Vivian Dane has purchased her uncle’s practice in the tiny town of Wales,

Missouri, where most residents still doubt her ability to treat their pets. But Viv is used to being

considered less-worthy than her predecessors. After all, her parents are world-renowned wildlife

vets, and most everyone is unimpressed she’s chosen to not follow directly in their footsteps.

Now Connor, a patient’s owner, is hot for Viv, but clearly doesn’t think she’s dating material

because he has a daughter…who he believes no woman is good enough for.

Being a perfect dad is EMT paramedic Connor’s life focus. He can’t seem to stay away

from sexy Doctor Viv, but attraction is as far as he’ll ever let it go. His mother abandoned him,

leaving him to be raised in the foster system, and then his wife abandoned both him and their

daughter. He absolutely will not risk bringing another woman into his little girl’s life and having

her feel the hurt of being left…again.

Forfeiting is easier than attempting and failing. So why does Viv feel compelled to prove

she’s a sure bet for Connor and his daughter? Can Connor trust Viv–and himself–enough to play

the possibilities?

I really would love to know what you think so comment away. Share your thoughts- honesty welcome.

Thank you all.
