BLURB:

Silvertown’s outcast, Poppy Tippen, has loved football hero Sam “The Force” Callahan forever. But he never seemed to know she was alive. Now he’s home from the war and she suddenly finds herself comforting him from the demons of “that damn war.” Is his attention merely an escape from the haunting nightmares? Or does she hold the interest of the only man she’s ever truly loved?

Sam Callahan’s only solace from the war nightmares wrecking his life comes in the unlikely form of a gypsy girl with stigmas of her own. He’s known Poppy his entire life, but there’s something different about her now. Something special he desperately wants to hold on to. Can he convince her she’s the only thing he needs to put the past behind him?

What is Skinbound? Ask Anna Kittrell ~ Calisa Rhose

Osiyo~

I’m so happy to have fellow TWRP author, friend and fellow OKRWA member, Anna Kittrell on The Ranch today!

We are also sister Scrimshaw Doll authors. Her new book, Skinbound comes years after Home and though her actual book follows others after mine, it also connects directly to Home in a small way.

I dragged Anna here to torture I mean ask some questions to let you get to know her some.

  1. Anna, please list your absolute necessities in order to write at your best.
  • I need plenty of teeny-tiny spiral notepads, on which I write scene ideas continuously. I crumple up each page and throw it away as I weave notes into my story. I love that part. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment.
  • A quiet surrounding is essential when I’m in a creative mindset. When working on scenes and dialogue, I physically isolate myself from the rest of my household or plug into white noise to minimalize distractions. Other writing activities such as character sketches or light outlining, I can manage on the sofa with other family members around.
  • I rise early and workout with exercise DVDs. Jennifer Galardi is my favorite instructor. Sweating first thing in the morning gets my blood and creativity pumping.
  • A few moments of quiet time, reflection, and thanking God for the day ahead gives me fresh focus and strength for what the day brings.
  • A printed calendar for my characters! As I learned the hard way, character timelines have a habit of twisting, turning, and tying themselves in knots. Pretty soon you find yourself burying folks who aren’t even dead yet. LOL. Lesson learned. Now I always print out at least a three month calendar to write the activities of my characters on. The sad part is, that while my characters’ calendars are filled to bursting with interesting and exciting events…my own is markedly blank.

Your process sounds interesting, Anna. I wish I had the motivation to work out any time. LOL

  1. Which comes first for you—plot or characters?

Normally, the idea for a plotline surfaces right along with visions of my main characters.

  1. What aspect of writing comes easy to you?  What is difficult?

The positive feedback I’ve received from readers and contest judges, hopefully means I write believable characters. Creating relatable people with extraordinary circumstances, then placing them in realistic settings is my passion.

Harder for me is executing an action I know little about—no matter how simple. For example, in Skinbound, my hero, Cabin, borrows a boat from his friend Richard. To get the vessel into the lake, the truck hauling the boat trailer had to be backed to the dock, then the boat had to be unhitched and guided into the water. Seemed easy enough. An hour and a half of research and two You Tube videos later, and Cabin and Richard finally had the boat in the water. To avoid making frivolous errors, I research even the most elementary tasks before writing them into my story. A little time invested now saves much embarrassment later. Keeps me from putting the trailer before the boat, so to speak.

LOL Great idea. I do that with certain things too. Of course, when I research it is usually hours before I get back to write what I was researching for… :/

  1. What is your writing routine?

In the summer months I rise early, enjoy the exercise and quiet time I mentioned earlier, shower, dress, then sit down to write. I write three or four hours at a time, have a short break, then write another three or four hours. Unfortunately, my writer’s dream-life comes to a screeching halt in August, when I return to work in the public school system. For the ten months that follow, my writing routine is hit or miss, catch it when I can, lunch hours, after work and weekends. I do, however, love the middle school secretary job I’ve performed for twelve years, and plan to keep my feet planted firmly under that desk until I can rest them fulltime beneath my own.

  1. What inspires you?

Strangely, I don’t know what inspires me until the ‘spark’ happens. Epiphanies strike from all-but-forgotten events in my childhood, idle conversation I’ve overheard in department stores, comments I’ve read on Facebook, my most embarrassing moments, and polite small talk. Many times I am inspired by the simple question, “What if?”

Some fun questions:

  1. Who or what would you walk over hot coals, climb a mountain, or swim an ocean to get to and why?

My husband, Tim. We have been together since I was fifteen years old, and I think the two of us have already done everything on your list. We’ve grown up together, and managed to keep from growing apart. I can’t imagine life without him, and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to live in the world if he wasn’t in it. He also gave me my two, astonishing, practically grown children, Evan and Brandilyn.

A true love story. And you celebrated your anniversary recently. Congrats again.

  1. Favorite television shows?

The SyFy network’s series ‘Face Off,’ in which contestants are judged by their ability to apply special effects makeup is my favorite show—I follow it faithfully. I also love to watch ‘Chopped’ on the Food Network. Personally, the only makeup I apply is the kind I slather on my face each morning, and I rarely cook anything more exotic than fried chicken. But there is something deeply gratifying about watching people do the things they are truly passionate about. No matter what that something is.

We talked about Face Off being your fave show. I’m not a foodie, so I just don’t ‘get’ shows that are food centered…though I love hell’s Kitchen! Weird. I think it’s mostly Gordon Ramsey that draws me in there. J

  1. Salty, sweet, or both?

Salty. I’m a Ruffles with French onion dip, queso and tortilla chip kind of gal.

Me too on certain days. Love PayDay candy bar. 😛 Now share a little about you.

Anna Kittrell has written stories for as long as she can remember. She still has most of her tattered creations—leftovers she was unable to sell on the playground for a dime—written in childish handwriting on notebook paper, bound with too many staples. Her love of storytelling has grown throughout the years, and she is thrilled her tales are now worth more than ten cents.

Growing up in small town Oklahoma, Anna spent many a summer day on the lakeshores she often writes about. Today, she works as a middle school secretary in her beloved hometown, where she resides with her high school sweetheart-turned-husband, Tim, and their two practically grown children, Evan and Brandilyn. She still loves visiting those muddy red lakeshores of her childhood, when she’s not too busy writing about them instead.

An ancient scrimshaw doll—does its gypsy magic protect or destroy?

As a child, Darcy Vaughan cowered beneath the malice of her twin sister, Scarlett. Now, Scarlett is back and Darcy hopes to establish the sisterly bond she’s always longed for. Instead, Scarlett tries to destroy Darcy’s life—and her new relationship with the town doctor.

Dr. Cabin Creighton returned to his hometown near Lake Chickasha, Oklahoma to take over his father’s practice. One look at Darcy, and Cabin wants nothing more than to love her forever. But a guilty heart and memories of his deceased wife are holding him back.

When someone from Scarlett’s past reappears, bad things start to happen. Darcy and Cabin struggle to keep their love alive, but as danger draws closer, Darcy finds herself once more at her sister’s mercy, with nothing but the yellowed bones of an ancient doll to protect her.

Excerpt:

“Really? This is how you treat your sister? Your twin?” Scarlett pushed past Darcy, into the living room.

“What—”

“You promised to check on me. I had a coughing spasm and very well could have died in that house all by myself.” She shook a cigarette from her pack, looked around the room, then slid it back in.

“May I intervene?” Cabin asked, his piercing gaze aimed at Scarlett. “You’re perfectly fine. I would have sent you to the hospital if I’d thought otherwise. As for the coughing spasm…you can blame those cigarettes for that.”

“Thank you, Dr. Drew. I’ll check into Celebrity Rehab right away.” She cackled, her breath reeking of alcohol. She turned to Darcy, snatching the doll from her hand. “Where did you get this?” she demanded. “How many crap-filled dumpsters did you have to dive into before you found the ridiculous thing? They should’ve buried these dried up bones right along with that crotchety old bat’s.” She pumped the doll’s legs in a suggestive motion and laughed, holding it from reach as Darcy grabbed for it.

Cabin circled Scarlett’s wrists with one hand, twisting the doll free with the other, and handed it to Darcy.

“My, you are a strong one.” Scarlett batted her lashes over bloodshot eyes. “I can certainly see why my sister…my twin sister…has such a bad case of Cabin fever.” She turned on her stilettoed heel and staggered through the doorway, onto the porch. “I hope you can remedy that, doctor.” She laughed as Cabin shut the door.

This –> is what friends are for!

Osiyo~

I have a friend-fan. Keep in mind I have seen/spoken to this friend from my long-ago childhood maybe three times in the last year, six in the previous 5 yrs, and none in the 20+ before moving back to Oklahoma in 2008. Maybe…and that is combined see+speak. She’s a long haul trucker and gone a lot too. My daughter is dating her son, how ironic, because neither of us knew for weeks after the kids met and began dating. I discovered it quite by accident.

Anyway, I knew she’d bought Home months ago but hadn’t heard if she read it (never speak, remember?) So imagine my delight when I got this email today:

OMG! I read the book Home. I loved it. I’m going to tell everyone I know to look for your ebook. I love those kind of stories. You did a wonderful job. Please  keep them coming and I will keep reading until my phone goes dead. ~LTJ~

🙂 I just want to say to those readers/writers out there who may read this and shake your nay-saying heads… I did not pay or ask her to read Home or say this. It was a private email, not meant for anyone else to see and, as far as I know, it’s not posted to Amazon in any attempt to generate sales. I ‘told’ her I was posting it here because it’s an awesome and honest review– and it’s my blog so I’ll do what I want. 😛 She didn’t say this as a friend, but as a reader.

And to her I say, Thank you my friend! I’ll have another book for you next spring! 🙂

If you would like to read Home, my short novella from The Wild Rose Press (on sale for $1.99 on Amazon now), and decide for yourself if it’s something you’ll like (I think you will) there’s a buy link embedded in the cover art in the sidebar at the top. Right click on the cover to open in a new tab/window if you aren’t ready to leave the Ranch just yet, or haven’t had a chance to look around, but would like to check out my book. Or you can click on The Wild Rose Press link here.

Thanks for stopping by and don’t forget, I’ll be here over the weekend with another 6 Sentence Sunday.

What is multi-published?

Osiyo~

No. That shaking isn’t an earthquake. It’s just me snoopy dancin’ around the Ranch this week.

Maybe my blog title should say WHO is multi-published.

The answer is… I AM!

I’m totally and completely thrilled to announce that Sunday, May 27, 2012 Lyrical Press offered me a contract for Perfect Dr. Viv via their Senior Editor, the lovely Piper Denna!!!!!! WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Even more fun, I get to be a debut author again, even though it’s not my first book published! *eyes HOME in the sidebar –>* It IS my first with Lyrical. 🙂 Don’cha just love loopholes? *snort*

I will have edits and the story will be re-titled so as soon as I have that I’ll happily share and I’ve got all current info in my Bookshelf right here in my site to update as information becomes available. I canna wait to see what their cover gods come up with for a cover for this one. Especially if Piper gets her way and the title changes to Paws, Claws and Lacey Bras! *gulp* No, this is NOT an erotic- it’s a veterinarian! lol 🙂

Thank you for letting me scream my good news from your rooftops! Like you have a choice. 😛

Why don’t you hop over to my bookshelf page and check out the unofficial blurb and excerpt, and unedited stats, for Perfect Dr. Viv?

Feel free to weigh in with title suggestions for a tortured EMT-P (mediflight) and a sexy veterinarian. Don’t forget there’s also a 7 yo daughter and her pet skunk to consider. 🙂 Or just help me pick one of these:

Kismet Unleashed

Paws, Claws and Lacey Bras

Rescued Trust

Hearts in Flight

Caged Trust

The Scent of Love

I can’t guarantee the winner will be the one accepted for publication, but it will be fun to see which one wins!

While you’re here, I’m blogging at Authors By Moonlight today on the joys of spring if you want to pop in there. I’d love to chat with you.

Six Sentence Sunday

Osiyo~

My name is Calisa, and I’m addicted to 6-Sentence Sundays! 😛

Six just aren’t enough! I’m seriously considering doing something about this. But for today, I’ve decided to go a few more times with Dray and Chelcie and then maybe move on to another WIP or book.

My lovebirds have moved past their first meeting and Chelcie has gone to visit the local leprechaun for advice. Yes, this story has a leprechaun! And it’s no surprise when Ludovic knows who Dray is, or that he knows the mysterious man is the fuel behind Chelcie’s visit. It’s more what he reveals that surprises her.

“How much danger does he pose for me?” she asked.

Suddenly Ludovic was cackling. “Dear girl, there is something much more important you need to consider.”

“What?”

“He will see inside you. Dray Corbeau is very gifted, very strong, so beware lest you test him.

Hm. Interesting turn of events for Chelcie. She’s become used to being the one to see inside Dray. 🙂

Thank you for coming by and I hope you enjoy this week’s peek. Don’t forget you can find many more participants if you click on the logo above.

A Personal Dedication

Osiyo~

I am so excited today! Because, because, because, becaaaaaause………. Because of the wonderful things she does!

Ok, I love The Wizard of Oz. I’m no Dorothy for sure, though I live in tornado alley with a tiny dog, Cocoa the temperamental Chihuahua.

But I’m singing praises for a wonderful woman by the name of Nancy Swanson today. Who? Let me explain.

Exactly one year ago I got an email with these words in it:

“My request for a contract is still with my senior editor, who says she will give me an answer on it sometime at the beginning of this coming week. So, anxious as both you and I are to go forward, we will await her decision and I’ll let you know as soon as possible.
Have a happy Mother’s Day anyway!”
Indeed that promised a spectacular Mother’s Day, 2011! Four days later I was out most of the day, it was Saturday, and when I got home I had an email waiting for me titled:

“thumbs up for HOME”

That email started out:

“Just got word from my senior editor…it’s a go!  As soon as I can get a mouse to work with my laptop I’ll send you the contract documents…”

So, the reason for my excitement today is that it was the beginning of my dreams all coming true. I would finally be a published author! And true to her word, Nan Swanson- my beautiful editor at The Wild Rose Press- sent me the contract soon after! She was on her way to the annual TWRP retreat when she sent me the first email and just home again when I got the second one. That was the longest week in my writing history, let me tell ya! 🙂

Now a year later I’m waiting for my first payday for that Vintage Rosette, my Scrimshaw Doll short story, HOME, proudly listed under this lovely Logo on the website.

Of course, my editor isn’t the only one I have to thank for my first book becoming a splendid reality. It wouldn’t be nearly as appealing to look at on Kindle, PC or Nook (or whatever you use to read it) without the stunning job Tina Lynn Stout did on my gorgeous cover! I adore the colors and soft appearance Tina chose to bring out the effects of the era. That car is perfect to reflect the 60’s.

Most of all, I have to thank Rhonda Penders and RJ Morris- – for taking a chance on me and over-looking my neurotic tendencies and offering that coveted contract! And to Lisa who made getting my baby out there possible with her talented marketing skills!
Here’s to The Wild Rose Press!!!

In the acceptance of my story, TWRP also enabled me to meet the bestest group of writers in Cyberland or print! I adore and love my Sister Roses!!!! They (ya’ll) have made this last year a fun ride. Thank you and raise your glasses in a toast to all Roses!

So…in celebration of the event– I’m giving away a copy of Home to one lucky commenter and I’ll throw in a real signature Rose Rock from my town here in Oklahoma! These are sandy rocks that, because of the sulphur in the dirt and sand in this area and the way water runs over the terrain, forms unusual and unique rose-shaped formations.

They are not always distinct as you can see by these pictures. [deleted] http://www.roserockmuseum.com/gallery/singles.html

(Rose Rock for a USA commenter only)

And since my name is Rhose…

Neat. Huh? 🙂

Join me in my celebration and win a book and a Rose!!! I’m verra excited to gift someone with my book!!!!!!

Leave your email with your comment and share what your most exciting or memorable event was as a writer. If you’re not a writer, what was your most memorable day in your adult life (weddings and baby births aside, because those always trump any other day!)?

Nardi Point with Nancy LaPonzina

Osiyo~

I am so honored to introduce my cyber friends here on the ranch to another of  my crit partners, and a talented writer. She’s here to let me dig into her gray matter a tad so I have her lassoed in the round pen. Let’s meet and then begin!

Ladies and gentlemen, (insert Oprah voice here)  Nancy LaPonzina!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Calisa! I’m so excited to be here with my critique partner and chat. Congratulations again on the recent release of Home! Love the cover!

Ah, what a lovely thing to say. Isn’t Nancy a great sport? Even tied up she didn’t forget my novella. I love my cover, too, Nancy. Thank you! So, let’s get to the reason you’re here and then the li’l smokies ought to be warm and the wine chilled. As happens often on the ranch, we’ll party into the night!

  1. Which comes first for you—plot or characters? Ahhhhh, for me it’s plot. Snatches of scenes here and there work themselves together into a bare beginning, middle and end. Then the characters find me—a face in a magazine, a name from a dream or overheard. Sometimes once I have a heroine, I ask her more about her issues and she’ll introduced me to other characters. Having said that, I suddenly became aware of a character for a third book barely on the drawing board. And I don’t even like her name. Can I say that out loud? And I know she’s someone who works with books and therapy—a bibliotherapist.
  2. What aspect of writing comes easy to you?  What is difficult? Believe it or not—revision. When I go back for line edits, I sometimes wonder who wrote this stuff? But I move along at a fast rate changing the words, changing long phrases into shorter ones, and it’s pleasing to see it “change for the good!” I suppose because the left brain editor gets her way during this stage and I don’t have to send her packing because this is her time to participate. Difficult would be structuring the POV character to let us know what other characters are experiencing through behavior and dialog. My characters could be called “thoughtful” so by that description, they are very aware of what others are doing or not doing in a scene and I have to show that.
  3. What inspires you? Inspiration comes from interests and questions I have. I generally write a list of issues to explore upfront. I find this is the best way to carry a story though the middle. It makes it easier if I’m interested. In Nardi Point I wanted to explore: the dynamic of beauty in a relationship; the effect of coincidence in pairing; preserving meaningful life moments against capitalism and greed; and exploring the toxic workplace. I have a big interest in archaeology; the metaphysical including astrology and dreamwork; alternative healing therapies, journaling; healthcare, and creating wonderful outdoor spaces of spiritual rest.
  4. Who are some of your must-read authors and why? I’m reading more women’s fiction than in the past. I’ve read Marilyn Brandt, and right now I’m loving Sarah Addison Allen for setting, North Carolina,  her touch of the unexpected but inspired magic. I’m on my third book of hers right now, Sugar Queen, and it’s the kind of story I dread finishing because then it won’t be there for me to dip into. Now that’s a good book when that happens!
  5. What did you enjoy most about writing your latest work? Nardi Point’s setting is local. Seeing the culture and environment of Raleigh, North Carolina from a writer’s viewpoint and how quickly this developed into my story was very exciting. One of the strongest tenets of writing advice is, write what you know. Well this was absolutely the case with Nardi Point.

And now for some fun to let your readers get to know you better.

1.  Who would you like to meet in the publishing industry and why? Oprah (Calisa says: see how she adores me? 😉 ) or Martha Stewart. Both women have great clout, savvy, and presence in the publishing industry and are tested taste-makers.

2.  Dog, cat, or neither? Cat right now. We have a rescue Maine coon, Copy, who loves to reach up to our faces and “butt it” in greeting. Then he rolls to the floor and rolls completely over three or four times. I wondered to our vet whether he may have been trained to do that. She gave me a look and said the challenge of teaching a cat to roll over would be amazing. So I took that for a no.

3.  Favorite movie and why? Well, Out of Africa, and yes, Sound of Music have to top the list. I believe in large part to the wonderful soundtracks. If you have a great story with great music, the complexity of the movies is so rewarding and entertaining. And I really like to be entertained!
