Calisa Rhose~Tuesday RoundUp presents~ Chrys Fey #ghosts #mfrwauthor

Osiyo~

Welcome one and all! Grab a beverage of choice, something sweet and sinful. No-no, not the men. What’s the matter with you? You know the hands-on rules… The guest gets first pick! 😉 Take a comfy seat for another, or a first, spin in the Round Pen.

I’m thrilled to welcome my wonderfully talented guest today, Chrys Fey, who is sharing her eBook, Ghost of Death with us!

chrysfeypicPlease show Chrys some real Ranch love!

Before I get to the nosy 5-3-4 part of this interview, tell us a bit about you.

My name is Chrys Fey and in case you’re wondering…that is a pen name. Chrys came from a nickname that my oldest friends call me, but I changed the spelling to make it more mystical. And Fey is a nickname used for a person thought to have supernatural qualities. Since the books I’ve been writing half my life all have supernatural elements, I thought Fey was perfect. And that is how “Chrys Fey” was born.

I love how you came up with your name! Okay, I’ll begin with five questions, then follow with three more, and end with four final ones.

My writing area at the moment is a corner of the couch in my living room. What does your writing space look like?

It’s a lot better since I was last at the Ranch and answered this question. It’s in a corner of my bedroom now next to a window with a lovely view of the tree in the front yard of my new house.

I love new houses. I’ll be moving into a new office soon too. For a lot of writers it’s a life-altering event coming up with titles and character names. Others it comes as naturally as breathing. Which is it for you?

It’s usually easy for me, but the title of “Ghost of Death” was originally Diary of a Dead Girl. Since I didn’t write it in the form of a diary and I’m also publishing “Witch of Death” later this month, I changed it. As for my characters’ names, the characters in “Ghost of Death” are named after people, so that was easy. *wink*

What advice would you offer aspiring and new writers?

Keep writing.

Keep dreaming.

Keep believing.

The constant shift of the industry makes me often scratch my head and ask ‘what next?’ So, what do you think it takes to be a successful author at the moment?

Do not overwhelm yourself. Stick with a few social media sites you like and stay active on

them, do a little marketing every day or at least a few times a week, and write no matter

what obstacles this ever-changing industry throws your way.

Oh, that’s good advice. Who would you like to meet in the publishing industry- dead or alive- and why?

J.K. Rowling. I’d like to have tea and biscuits with her and to talk about writing, books, and life in general.

It’s time for 3 in 1! I’ll ask the questions and you answer them in one word. 😆

Favorite animal?

TOO MANY!

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter?

Fall

Favorite food?

Italian

Well done! 🙂

Okay, Flash four. Ready?

What are you working on now?

Well, I’m going to be sending my publisher the sequel to Hurricane Crimes (with fingers crossed) very soon and I am working on book three! 😀

I have my copy of both these books and can’t wait to read them (some day). LOL What are you sharing today?

Ghost of Death!

GhostofDeath05.05.15

Jolie Montgomery, a twenty-one-year-old woman, wakes up in an alley next to her corpse. She has no memories of her murder or the night she died. She didn’t even see the killer’s face before he or she took her life. Wanting justice, Jolie seeks answers in the only way a ghost can…by stalking the lead detective on the case.

Avrianna Heavenborn is determined to find the person responsible for a young woman’s death. She gets closer to the killer’s identity with every clue she uncovers, and Jolie is with her every step of the way.

But if they don’t solve her murder soon, Jolie will be an earth-bound spirit forever.

I love her name. Where can we find you and your books?

Where will you be next?

Tomorrow I am visiting Julie Flanders. On Thursday, I’ll be stopping by Christine Rains’

blog. And Friday I’ll have fun posts at the blogs of Marlow Kelly, Medeia Sharif, and Kelly Hashway.

WitchofDeath-CFWitch of Death is also available for PRE-ORDER! 🙂

Detective Reid Sanders doesn’t believe in the supernatural, but when he’s faced with a crime scene that defies the laws of nature, he has no other choice but to start believing. And solving a magical murder involves working with a witch.

Liberty Sawyer embodies the look of your classic evil witch, so, it’s no surprise when she uncovers the murderer is a witch that she becomes Reid’s number one suspect. If she can’t convince him otherwise, more people could lose their lives to dark magic, including her.

VOTE: Which do you prefer? Ghosts or witches.

I’ll go with ghosts. 🙂

Thank you so much for playing along Chrys! Wishing you much luck with your book(s) and writing. I hope you’ll come visit again one day.

Thank you, Calisa! I love visiting the Ranch! 😀

And the Ranch loves having you, Chrys!

Don’t forget to place your vote of witch or ghost in comments.

Have a lovely day!

Calisa Rhose presents ~Review and a FREE book~ A Ghost of a Promise by Kelly Moran #MFRWAuthor #review #freebook

Osiyo~

See the end for how to get a free copy of A Ghost of a Promise.

A few weeks ago I was honored to receive an ARC (advanced readers copy) of A Ghost of a Promise by Kelly Moran. She’s one of my auto buy authors. I LOVE her work! So when the publisher was sending out copies for review I quickly raised my hand, even though I’m not a fluent or regular reviewer. Sure, I review books I read on Amazon, Goodreads, B&N and other places if possible, but I don’t call myself a “reviewer” by title. I’m a reader who gives back to the community with a small opinion of books I read. I admit I don’t remember to review every story I read and rarely–very rarely–have I put those reviews here on the Ranch. But there are a few I want to start reviewing here on the Ranch. I’m thinking of putting a tab in just for those reviews, but maybe I’ll just blog them. We’ll see.

On to my 5* review of Kelly’s latest release!

Taken by Storm begins as the darkly bitter Grand Vizier, Lord Boltar, is about to claim what he believes belongs to him, the rule of Avistad. The King of Avistad’s son, Prince Tahj, has just returned from a trip and senses the unrest even before his best friend and captain, Radeem, warns him. Radeem heard rumors and suspects the King’s advisor is planning to overthrow the crown. Just as Tahj discovers a “gift” from Lord Boltar, a young girl bound and gagged on the prince’s bedroom floor, fighting erupts. Tahj, Radeem, and the captive girl, Bashea, escape the castle in a hail of arrows.

Born from the fire of a coup, Tahj and Bashea’s relationship burns with a passion that neither of them quite understands. The pair is drawn closer together as they face various perils, Boltar’s soldiers, a screaming panther, even the scathing winds of a desert storm. But after what she went through at the hands of Boltar’s men, Bashea is afraid to trust. Yet it is her fiery nature that both appeals to Tahj, and drives him crazy. In fact, when Bashea’s brother, Bagrat, informs Tahj that Bashea means “lips of the gods,” he retorts, “Are you sure you don’t mean tongue of the devil?” It takes a long separation to bring them back to each other, but when Tahj does return, it is once again during a battle with Lord Boltar. But now the overlord, who has been forced beyond reason by Tahj’s success in retaking the throne, is an even more dangerous threat than before. Calisa Rhose presents ~ Ghosts-Real and Fictional by Liza O’Connor

Welcome Liza! I can’t wait to hear about your ghosts so let’s get right to it! 😀

Lassierfloating

I live with a ghost. An Irish fellow once offered to get rid of my ghost for me. I refused without hesitation, because a) this is her house, her brother built it for her, and b) I rather like having a ghost hanging around. She is a very nice lady, named Mrs. Martin.

Not that she told me her name. It’s just my house has only had three owners, and the only person who has died in this house is Mrs. Martin. While she’s never spoken to me, nor materialized before me, she has made her presence known in many ways.

Floorboards constantly creaked as if someone was walking on them. Doors would open, I presumed from a draft. Cabinet doors opened as well. All of these oddities I attributed to the house being 50-years-old.

But then, the throw rugs I placed in various places to protect the carpet began to move. I’ve never seen them move, but I put them in a certain spot and the next time I enter the room they are placed somewhere else. Now the creaky boards sounding like footprints took on another possibility. So I asked my neighbor if anyone had ever died in my house and discovered the original owner of my house had indeed died in her bedroom.

I thought perhaps all the walking about and opening doors was because she searched for the adorable five daughters who lived in the house before me. I told her the little girls had gone to live by the shore and she was stuck with me now. And just like that, the constant door openings and floor board creaking ceased. The rugs still move, even to this day. But otherwise, she’s pretty quiet now.

However, when my dad came to visit and I put him in her room, she got riled up. The first morning he comes in to the kitchen and asks me if I have a ghost. I admitted I did and asked him how he knew. He said he’d heard what sounded like boots slam down on the floor and then stomp over to him. Then he heard a heavy sigh and the sound of boots leaving the room.

While I’ve never seen her, one Halloween I went to the door, where a mother stood with her little monsters. She complimented me on my Halloween scene. I had no idea what she spoke of. She insisted an old woman sat at my piano playing.

I was highly insulted Mrs. Martin would show herself to strangers, but not me. She got scolded. And when the next batch of monsters arrived, I told her she could answer the door. She refused.

How does this equate to my fictional ghost, Lassier?Lassier

Well, Lassier not only materializes, but does so in a convincing manner. He can even excite his molecules sufficiently to generate the sensation of warm skin. So most of the million women he has made love to never had a clue he was a ghost.

Also, he’s much older. He was alive in the 15th century. Nor is he the only ghost in the castle. Any Durran buried in the family cemetery will return as a ghost. However, since Gar refuses to invite anyone to the castle, most of the ghosts float about as white orbs. Materializing takes a great deal of effort, and if no one is even going to notice, why bother? Only Lassier materializes daily and can do so in spectacular form.

Mr Finch_LC

His ghost ocelot is a bit different. You cannot see the cat, but you can feel him. And when he walks across something soft like a bed, you can see the indentations. He also has a deep resonating purr that can put you at ease.

Lassier-n-Senna

Having a real ghost opened my eyes to all sorts of potentials, and one night I dreamed of a sexy ghost lover. The next morning I googled the matter and discovered this matter has been talked and written about since early man. So I decided to write a book with a sexy, lascivious ghost, who is treated as a real person instead of something evil or paranormal.

Ghost Lover

By Liza O’Connor

Contemporary Romance with a touch of paranormal

 Blurb

Two sexy English brothers. One irresistible ghost. Who would you choose as your lover?

Completely broke and with a criminal record to boot, Senna Smith is one day from eviction from her apartment when Brendon, her promiscuous roommate from London, suggests she go to England, marry him, and manage his fortune. With few other options, she agrees to an open marriage. But she’ll never, ever, have sex with him, knowing if she falls in love with him, he’ll break her heart.

As trustee of Brendon’s family fortune, there is no way Brendon’s older brother, Garrison Durran, is going to let him marry a self-professed American gold-digger. As Senna tries to embrace castle life and English society for Brendon’s sake, Gar discovers Senna is the perfect woman for him–beautiful and intelligent, kind and caring. Now, if she wasn’t already engaged to his brother…

The ancestral ghost of Durran Castle has to intervene if the Durran brothers have any chance of an heir. He can’t leave them to fix matters on their own. They are useless buggers when it comes to love. As counselor to Gar, matchmaker for Brendon, and lover to Senna, a ghost’s work is never done.

 Excerpt

Senna woke to her breast beeping. Trying to make sense of the oddity, she pushed herself up to rest on her elbows and discovered the noise came from Brendon’s wristwatch. Somehow, his hand had found its way beneath her bra during the night, and now chirped like a baby chick.

She contemplated tearing his hand off at the wrist, but he looked so angelic with his curly dark hair framing his handsome face. With a heavy sigh, she unlatched her bra and eased his hand out, then gently shook him until his face scrunched into a pained grimace.

He groaned and frowned at his noisy watch. “This is a god-awful hour to be woken up,” he said in his sexy British accent. “Never bothers me when I’m coming home at this hour.”

Senna rolled her eyes. “Speak for yourself.”

Pushing himself up, he shook his head. “Remember the second night I came around? You kept yelling at me, ‘Did I realize it was four in the morning?’ At the time, I couldn’t understand your fuss.” He groaned and scratched his scalp. “Well, I certainly understand it now. It’s bloody hell to be woken at this ungodly hour.”

Calisa Rhose Presents ~ Heather Kinnane

Osiyo~

Welcome to the Ranch and visiting my guest and crit partner, Heather Kinnane! I’m locking Heather in the round pen for the day to share insights on sequels so grab a donut and coffee and let’s listen. 🙂

Unexpected Sequels

In August this year I finally celebrated the publication of my first book. It’s an ebook, a short romantic fantasy at just over 16,000 words, titled A Faery Dream.

AFaeryDreamFinalmedA Faery Dream is the story of 30-something year old Melissa, who has always felt different. For months she’s been dreaming of the particularly sexy Kellen, all the while trying to work out whether her struggling relationship with Tom is worth saving. She decides it isn’t, and just as she does so Kellen steps from her dreams into her reality, with secrets of the past, and explanations for why she’s always felt so out of place – her mother was one of the Fae, and Melissa has a faery name, Nyssa. Kellen is keen for Melissa to return to the Faery Realm with him, but he doesn’t tell Melissa everything, and in holding back he risks not only their relationship but the future of all the Fae.

A Faery Dream was always going to be stand alone. When I got to the end of it (on all of my drafts), I was convinced there was no more – what else could I write that the reader couldn’t imagine? A Happy Ever After was inevitable, there was simply nothing more of the story to tell.

It seems I was wrong.

After it was published, the reviews began to trickle in. They had two things in common, a love of the story (*phew* – author wipes her brow), and a conviction there should be more to it. “I hope it’s a prelude to a full novel,” one reviewer said. “I want more, more, more,” said another. I have to admit I dismissed the first comment – from a friend – who said they hoped for more, but when others felt the same it seems at least my muse was listening, even if I wasn’t.

Approximately three days after A Faery Dream was published, my muse hit me with an opening scene, and once I started I couldn’t stop. Fast forward to around three weeks later, and the first draft of what is presently titled A Faery Dream 2 (I know – totally original 😛 Of course, the name will most likely change in some way by the time it’s published) was finished at 40,000 words. I can’t really tell you much about A Faery Dream 2 without giving away the end of A Faery Dream, but I can say that it does continue Nyssa and Kellen’s story.

Once it was written I left it for a month, and now I’ve opened the file again, for the editing to begin. I’m about half way through the first edit – there will be at least two passes before it’s handed over to my trusty beta-readers for their keen eagle-eyes to find any problems, and then another pass or two (or more) before I’ll submit it to my publishers, so there’s going to be a bit of a wait yet.

But there’s a lesson for writers in this, I think, that a story is never over, even when you’re certain it is. And perhaps there’s a lesson for readers too – if you love a story so much you want more, let the author know – even if she/he doesn’t plan on adding to the tale, maybe their muse is listening, and will fulfill that wish for you! 🙂

Excerpt Truth and Deceit:

Prologue

She ran. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps, her heart pounding, her lungs burning as she clutched the infant to her chest and poured all of her energy into escape. An unnatural darkness flooded the night. There was no moon visible, no stars peeking through the dense fog. Thankfully, she knew these woods well, had grown up here, playing manhunt with the rest of the kids from the neighborhood. Only this was no game; this hunt was all too real, the consequences of being caught, severe.

Her eyes strained as she tried to watch for obstacles, fallen trees, puddles, patches of wet leaves. She had to keep her footing. A fall now could be deadly. Mud oozed between her toes as it filled the sneakers she had quickly shoved onto her bare feet.

Between the darkness and the fog, she could barely see where she was going. Yet, she didn’t dare slow down. Nor did she risk a glance back over her shoulder, afraid fear would paralyze her if she saw him coming.

She tried to listen for the telltale sounds of pursuit, but other than the sound of her own footfalls, the sucking of the mud each time she lifted a foot, and the pounding of her own heart, silence mocked her. Too much silence, the kind that warned of a predator on the hunt. But these woods had no large predators. Skunks, chipmunks, squirrels, even an occasional fox made their homes here. There were deer, beautiful, graceful, but not dangerous.

And then she heard it. A large branch snapping, the sound like a shotgun blast echoing in the silence. She knew that sound. When she and her friends were kids, they would hang around the woods, often bored, snapping the dead branches that littered the ground. She also knew that she was meant to hear it. He moved too stealthily for the noise to have been a mistake. It was part of the game, to ratchet up the fear, let her know just how close he was.

She looked around wildly, trying to get her bearings. Had she missed the trail that turned off and headed toward the canal? The shadows pressed too closely, she couldn’t tell. She had to find it before he reached her. Desperation had her risking one quick glance down at the baby. That was all it took to ground her—one peek at the helpless child depending on her.

She took a deep breath and looked around again. She had to find the trail and make it to the boathouse by the canal. Men often hung around down there late into the night, drinking beer, playing poker, enjoying the break from work and home. There would be help there, people to protect her and her baby.

When she recognized the fallen tree, where she had shared her first kiss with Jimmy Hessler, the first glimmer of hope since this chase had begun shivered through her. The path lay directly in front of her. She was almost there. A few more steps and she’d be on the trail where she could run full out. She could outrun him once she was out of the thick underbrush. She wouldn’t have the mud grabbing at her feet, the thorns tearing at her legs, or the undergrowth tripping her. She’d run track in high school, had run cross-country through these very trails, and she was fast. The fear prodded her to move even faster, adrenaline coursing through her bloodstream. Optimism soared as she covered the last few feet that would lead her to safety.

She felt a sting in her back, and she went down hard. She curled her body over the baby as best she could, trying to offer as much protection as possible. She landed hard on her right side, her hip slamming into a rock, sending pain shooting all the way up her side and down her leg. An explosion of light burst in front of her eyes as she struggled, fiercely, to hold on to consciousness. She fought against the eddy of blackness closing in on her from both sides, tunneling her vision.

As she dragged herself slowly forward, she spotted the old tree on the corner of the trail. She used her left foot to push herself forward, grabbing hold of anything she could reach to pull herself toward the tree. Thorns tore at her hands, her hair, her face; excruciating pain shot through her back. She clutched the baby to her breast. Sheer determination propelled her the last few inches to her goal. When she finally made it, she pushed the bushes aside and placed the swaddled infant into the hollow at the base of the tree, praying it wouldn’t start to cry until the man had gone. Praying it would cry loud enough to attract help once he had. She took one last look at her child. “I love you, my baby,” she whispered, and allowed the thick bushes to spring back into place, effectively camouflaging the tentative hiding place. Then, using the last of her energy, she pushed away from the tree and rolled over, coming to rest facedown with the lower half of her body still resting in the leaves and brush, and her upper body lying across the trail she had been so desperately trying to reach.

* * *

When he reached her, he didn’t even bother to bend down, just used his foot to roll her onto her back. A jolt of surprise shot through him when he realized the infant was not underneath her. It shattered his arrogance and drove him to his knees. He pawed frantically through the brush, searching for the child. He didn’t need a light, was used to the dark and could see as well as if the sun were illuminating the shadows and fog that covered the ground.

There was no baby.

Sweat sprung out on his forehead. Where was it? Had she left the child somewhere? A chill crawled down his spine. Had it even been with her when she’d fled the apartment?

The sudden realization that he had just gone from the hunter to the prey brought with it true, gut-wrenching fear.

Calisa Rhose presents ~ For love of a tale by Juli D. Revezzo

Osiyo~

It’s not Tuesday, but my Tuesday guest asked for today while on tour promoting her first Wild Rose Press book. Who am I to turn down a favorite guest? So with nothing more from me, here’s Juli D. Revezzo sharing Passion’s Sacred Dance!

By Juli D. Revezzo

JuliDRevezzobLike many writers I have been a storyteller from a young age. Everything had a dash of fantasy here, a little bit of rhyme and music there, but in all forms, there was always a story in my mind—and in my house, the Hobbit, the Classics, modern day romance it was all there, even storytelling songwriters.

In the intervening years a burning love for the Arthurian tales always existed. When I think of a hero, those are the men (and women) I think of. So it seemed second nature when I sat down to write Passion’s Sacred Dance, my debut paranormal romance novel for The Wild Rose Press, that I might take my cue from the stories I’ve loved forever. These are stories that have stayed with us from the moment they were spoken by traveling minstrels in the fire-lit halls of the Middle Ages. Yes, love works into it too. If we didn’t love what we do, as writers, do you think we’d stay up ‘til all hours, agonizing about finding just the right word?

The lifelong love of these heroic tales and honorable warriors and maidens fair soon turned to an interest in the Celtic myths and Legends. I blame that for the beginnings of what became Passion’s Sacred Dance. The story of a battle between the Tuatha dé Danann and their old enemy Balor of the Evil Eye tied up in knots in my mind with the current Urban Fantasies and paranormal romances I was reading at the time, and out walked a woman in a business suit, with a sword-wielding knight in jeans behind her. “Do we have a story for you!”

What could I do but what I’ve always done, and write it down? Would you like to know how the story turned out? Here’s a little taste.

PassionsSacredDance_JuliRevezzo

Battling mounting debt, Stacy Macken is determined not to lose her historic art gallery. When Aaron Fielding appears and offers to help, she fights to keep the attraction sizzling between them from clouding her judgment. He may be her savior in disguise–but can she trust him?

Aaron intrigues her with tales of the Tuatha dé Danann, sworn warriors who protect humanity from the monsters seeking their destruction. If Aaron can prove what he claims, she would give up anything to help–even the gallery he claims is sacred ground. But with her property set to stage the next epic battle, she needs answers. An old family diary will confirm the ancient legend is true, if only they can find it in time.

If the battle is lost, the enemy will take control of Earth for the next five hundred years. Stacy and Aaron’s budding love might only complicate things.

Passion’s Sacred Dance can also be purchased for Kindle from Amazon and coming soon to other venues. I hope you’ll check it out and enjoy the story I had to tell!
