A country maiden—a worldly man—an undeniable love

A determined man on a singular path, Harry Bryce is not pleased when the Crown awards him a title, nor is he gratified to learn of an unexpected inheritance in Cornwall. Even less welcome is the mandatory sabbatical from his position at the War Office, just when England needs every man in the fight against Napoleon’s subversive agents. Chafing at the unwanted holiday, Harry uses the time to inspect his new property, only to be entangled in the affairs of a young Cornish woman whose family and home are threatened with destruction. Compelled by his compassionate nature to assist her, he is caught in a complex situation that thoroughly disrupts his carefully ordered life.

In contending with repeated attempts on her brother’s life, an uncle unashamedly stripping the estate of income, and a greedy earl who is desperate to mine copper on her land, Kerra Trevaine needs all the strength and fortitude she possesses. But the arrival of the mysterious Mr. Bryce is perhaps the greatest danger she faces. For while he stands firmly against Kerra’s enemies, the dangerously attractive gentleman threatens to win Kerra’s heart—and that may be the most challenging test of all.

Spooky Truth or Fiction ~ Calisa Rhose

Osiyo~

I’m thrilled to be a part of the Wild Rose Press’s Haunted Garden Blog Hop! There are lots of blogs to have fun with from now through the week (26-31) with prizes at every single stop! All you have to do is click on the five links below to go to the next set and comment to win. Easy-peesy, right? So sit back and enjoy the ride.

I remember one year my sister, brother and I got to go trick-or-treating with my cousin and aunt. I recall how excited, but a little scared I was to be in the dark with my aunt in a strange town. Now this might seem odd and you may be chuckling, but you don’t know my aunt.

She was my mother’s baby sister, and where my mom and the middle sister grew up average women, Auntie went…her own way.

I’m a fan of that show, TRUTH OR FICTION, where they show three or four short stories of supernatural or questionable events and you’re supposed to guess whether they are true or false. I usually get them all wrong. 😆 But that gave me an idea for this post, and to keep from getting sued (or worse!) I’ve made my own mother and her two sisters as the subjects–so here goes…

Truth or fiction?

  1. Auntie liked her candles and often talks about visiting the Faith Healers on a regular basis. She’s given me remedies to heal a curse that involves throwing a blessed coin into the sea as she repeated a chant three (or five?) times. For me, this thought conjure images of a cloaked woman, dark hair blowing wildly from the edges of a huge hood, wide skirt billowing around her legs, as she strolls on a jagged cliff high above crashing waves…

I can almost hear her chanting the secret words the Faith Healer told her to before throwing the coin into the murky depths below.

  1. Auntie also told me to put a room temperature, raw egg under the bed of a sick person to draw out the fever–which will hard boil the egg.
  1. Auntie will do almost anything to prevent her picture taken (though she’s had her familial moments lol), because she claims every time (my) picture is taken, a little piece of my soul is stolen.
  1. She told me about a boyfriend who cheated on her once when I was around ten years old. At some point after that he was arrested for some misdemeanor. The next morning the man supposedly awoke in the jail cell, with bruises and sore all over and claimed “someone I couldn’t see beat me up all night.”

I guess Halloween doesn’t mean as much to me because I lived it daily day growing up.

But auntie wasn’t the only special one in my family.

My mother had her gifts too. I told the story last year of her guardian angel and the first time I saw him. Well, let me tell you about another talent she possessed before her death. I got her to sit and do a partial card reading for me when I was eighteen. I don’t remember the results of that reading, probably because ever since I was entranced by the story she told me that day. She would only do a partial readings, and then only if the cards fell right. If they didn’t she’d take them back and walk away.

Why?

I don’t pretend to understand how card readings work, but the story is that when I was around eight months old my mom read for her middle sister for fun one day. They laughed as one card after another revealed horrible details. My aunt would be in a car, in rain, and run off a bridge  and die before her twenty-fifth birthday.

  1. Less than a month later my aunt and her husband got into a fight that to this day is conflicted and mysterious, the events following that argument even more suspect and sketchy.

In the end it was my cousin, only four at the time, who revealed a mystery. According to my cousin (who claims no knowledge of this conversation today), that my uncle deliberately drove off a little bridge a few miles from their house, in a rain storm. The three kids, nor her husband were injured, but her neck was broken. Her death was recorded as accidental. Her twenty-fifth birthday came a few days after her funeral.

So what about me, you might ask? I’ve already admitted to seeing my mother’s guardian angel. That’s as far as I’ll go here.

Now for the fun part.

Do you believe these stories really happened? Why? Why not? I’ll reveal the answers on the 31st!

Hop over to these author sites for more fun and I’ll be choosing one lucky commenter to receive a Wild Rose Press gift certificate or two (value to be determined on number of winners I pick :)) after the contest ends on October 31.

The Joy of Aging- Fadeout by Rolynn Anderson

Osiyo~

I have the author of a book I am desperately trying to acquire still. This book has slowly become a must read for me. LOL Please welcome Rolynn Anderson, author of Fadeout, and sister Rose friend.

BELLA PROVES THE JOY OF AGING in FADEOUT, by Rolynn Anderson

(A novel about a boutique funeral planner whose clients refuse to rest in peace)

The brain doesn’t age, I’ve discovered.  At least it doesn’t seem to age nearly as fast as our bodies do.  That’s why one of my characters in FADEOUT, Bella Keller, dresses and acts twenty years younger than her age of 69.  She’s slim and petite with a profusion of red, curly hair haloed around her head.  Her skin is wrinkled and leather-looking from years of enjoying the outdoors, but she is so energetic and so positive, that her wrinkles are a joy to behold because they are placeholders for her smiles and reminders of her joy.

She likes to wear glittery T-shirts emblazoned with the names of musicals she’s enjoyed.  WICKED, OZ, SHOWBOAT…she has twenty of them that she wears with capris and flip flops.

For fees and for free she has served as a home decorator (“home desecrator,” she calls herself) all her life.  She’s itching to help the funeral planner three doors down, who hasn’t bought furniture for her house in the six months she’s lived there.  That the woman is planning her husband’s memorial and has caught the fancy of her grandson, Roman Keller, makes her want to get to know Jan Solvang.

Though she mourns the passing of her husband, she continues to live her life fully, as Joe would have wanted it.  But what should she do about the enormous secret she’s been keeping about her husband for more than forty years?

I can’t wait for you to befriend Bella when you read FADEOUT…and learn how she ‘desecrates’ and how well she keeps secrets.

FADEOUT, the first of the Funeral Planner Suspense Series:

Jan Solvang has spent her life avoiding conflict and commitment. Six months ago, she left a marriage proposal and a job in Seattle to care for her dying mother. Now she’s stuck with her mother’s California house and her mother’s dog, filling her mother’s shoes as a memorial planner with her estranged father.

Roman Keller thrives on conflict, writing documentaries that reveal the flaws of the famous. Jan’s challenge is to help him write a positive eulogy for a grandfather he disliked, but Roman is more interested in her other client: a powerful attorney with a dark past his family wants buried with him. If Jan stands behind the family and Roman goes for the exposé, who’s in danger and who wins?

The tension between them pulls tighter as each discovers the other is keeping secrets.  But if they tell the truth, will they destroy any chance for love?

WHAT WE DO IS WHAT WE ARE

Osiyo~

What a treat I have on the ranch for you today. Author, golfer and all around wonderful person, Rolynn Anderson is here with wise words and a great book. Thanks for visiting Rolynn and sharing Last Resort with us!

I write, I golf, I garden, and I boat.  Okay, that last verb didn’t quite work, even though it’s parallel, but you get the drift.  Consider for a moment the verbs that define you…your dedicated efforts, endeavors that pull you deeply into “them” and challenge you immensely.

Have you got one or two?  Good.  Keep them in your head.

I just finished reading GOLFING WITH GOD: A NOVEL ABOUT HEAVEN AND EARTH, by Roland Merullo.   I’m not sure I would have read the book if it hadn’t been my friend’s pick for book club.  Even when she told me the book was a quirky approach to spirituality, I viewed the first few pages skeptically.  Still, I love to golf, so the teacher/golfer main character and the faint hope that I might learn something to improve my game, moved me to read on.

A side-note about a fellow author (from his Amazon bio) “Roland Merullo’s best-selling novel, Breakfast with Buddha, recently went into its 11th printing. Like Golfing with God before it, and American Savior after it, Breakfast with Buddha treats questions of philosophy/spirituality from a multi-denominational viewpoint and with a healthy dose of humor.” http://www.amazon.com/Roland-Merullo/e/B001IQXCGE

Turns out the book is a funny and instructive allegory about one multiply reincarnated human’s journey toward being a better person, and, you guessed it, becoming a better golfer.  In a good portion of the novel, God is an attractive woman with a case of the short-game (chipping and putting) yips, that our main character, Hank, is supposed to eradicate.  Typical of allegories, this isn’t about golf, it’s about character improvement.  Hank says: “When your soul is riddled with quirks and urges, old failures and fresh embarrassments, you need help.”  Turns out he not only learns how to be better person by instructing God, but he also sees how golf is a tool and a template for working out his internal issues.

Now it’s time for you to trot out the endeavors you chose, above.  Hank would say that if you pay attention to the elements of that endeavor (mountain-climbing, say), they will help you learn how to become the kind of person you want to be.  Is he (Merullo and Frank) right?  Take my writing.  Does the act of writing as well as the characters and stories I choose, teach me something about my own struggles and serve as a tool for managing them?

What do you think?  Cool or crazy ideas?  My tentative take: I’m moved to think more about the concepts, because my golf game has improved since I read the book!
